FAQs

  • The Academic Center for Excellence is a collaborative environment, which fosters critical thinking skills, creativity, and continual learning by providing student support services and academic guidance. The Academic Center for Excellence provides Academic Coaches, Student Support Staff, Student Tutoring, and Office of Information and Technology Support Staff.
  • Any current NCCC student, staff, or faculty member can use the Academic Center for Excellence. Students will just need to bring their NCCC ID card to swipe in and out. Students will also need their ID card for printing services. 
  • The Academic Center for Excellence is located on the Sanborn campus within the Henrietta G. Lewis Library.
  • General computer use hours within the Academic Center for Excellence are:
    1. Monday - Thursday: 8:00am - 9:00pm
    2. Friday: 7:30am - 4:00pm
    3. Saturday: 11:00am - 3:00pm

  • Faculty - As a first step, we ask that you consult with your instructor(s) during office hours. Our faculty are committed to your success and know what is best for you to succeed in class.
  • Academic Coaches - If you would like individualized attention, you can make a one-on-one appointment with an academic coach on campus. To see what courses we offer tutoring in and to make an appointment, visit the 'Make an Appointment' tab and click on the 'Make an Appointment' button.
  • Student Tutors - If you have a quick question, you can visit one of our student tutors within ACE. Be sure to check the 'Hours' tab for their availability. This is a walk-in service; no appointment is necessary.
  • Student Support Staff - The Student Support Staff within the Academic Center for Excellence are available to provide academic guidance including answering student questions or redirecting students to appropriate resources on campus.
  • Academic Coaches are professional tutors with an educational background in content-specific areas. Coaches are great resources for questions and concerns that require immediate attention.
  • Academic coaches can help you:
  • Understand course content
  • Practice essential skills
  • Prepare for exams
  • Build test-taking strategies
  • Use textbooks, technology, and other resources
  • Brainstorm and develop ideas
  • Organize and sharpen ideas
  • Construct logical arguments
  • Form an outline, thesis, topic sentences
  • Review your work
  • Make ideas flow smoothly
  • Reiterate proofreading strategies
  • Overcome writer’s block and anxiety
  • Student Tutors are current NCCC students that have an overall GPA of 3.0 or better and received a B or better in the course(s) they are tutoring.
  • Student tutors are available by appointment for an individualized tutoring session.
  • All student tutoring services are located across from the Academic Center for Excellence in G-223.
  • Student tutors are interviewed by our Academic Center for Excellence staff and recommended by faculty members on campus.
  • On the NCCC homepage type “Tutor” into the search box at the top right of the page.
  • Select “Student Tutoring,” which is on the Academic Center for Excellence homepage.
  • Select “Make an Appointment” (be sure to select the correct campus).
  • From there, you can select the course you are looking for assistance in and find a tutor that has compatible availability.
  • Class textbook

  • Any other necessary materials

The Student Support Staff can provide academic guidance including answering student questions or redirecting students to appropriate resources on campus. If you have a question about anything campus related, visit the Student Support Staff in G-223!
