College Placement Tests
> See Detailed Info about Placement Tests

Several certificate and degree programs require prerequisites before an application can be processed. Placement testing is required of all students in writing, reading and mathematics before they can be officially accepted into a program of study.

Exemption from placement tests may be possible if prior credits have been completed at the college level or with appropriate NYS Regents, SAT, or ACT scores.

Test Exemption Policies

College Placement Tests may be waived for applicants who meet any of the following criteria:

Transfer students should send prior school transcripts to the Admissions Office.

NCCC does not exempt students from placement tests based on scores of other testing instruments or academic foundations coursework from a transfer school. Such students must demonstrate competency by passing equivalent college credit courses or NCCC's tests.

Professionals in the Admissions Office or Testing Center can give you additional information about these policies.

Academic Foundation courses may be required if there is a concern detected. These courses are to be taken in the student's first semester, and do not count toward the degree or certificate.

Dual Admission

NCCC also offers a Dual Admission program with several area colleges and universities. Dual Admission provides early registration and guaranteed acceptance to upon successful completion of coursework at NCCC. The student enters the four-year institution with junior standing providing they have maintained the academic grade point average required at the transfer institution.

Admission Categories & Application Process

Students entering NCCC are accepted under one of the following classifications:

New Students
Freshmen, applicants with no previous college experience, may be admitted in Fall or Spring semesters, depending upon curricula availability. See specific curriculum outlines in this catalog.

Transfer Students
A transfer student is one who has completed at least one course at another college. Official transcript(s) will be evaluated to determine if any credits are applicable to the certificate or degree program. A minimum of 50% of the credits required for the certificate or degree program must be completed at NCCC.

An official transcript can be obtained by student's request from the Registrar's Office at the previous college(s) attended. Transfer credits may be accepted for members of the U.S. Armed Forces. In some cases, college catalogs from the previous institution may be requested from students.

For students in the New or Transfer categories, applying only to NCCC, the NCCC Application for Admission is available at the Office of Admissions. There is no application processing fee for the NCCC application.

Students who are applying to more than one SUNY campus may find the SUNY application convenient. The SUNY applications are available at high school counseling offices or at the Admissions Office at NCCC. A $30 per college processing fee is required for the SUNY application.

An NCCC application can be mailed to the Office of Admissions or, if a student prefers, can be accepted by an adviser in the Admissions Office. In either case, a copy of the student's high school transcript is required at the time of application. For students who earned a General Equivalency Diploma, a copy of the scores and diploma are required.

For those applicants using the SUNY application, procedural instructions are detailed in, the admissions application booklet. The completed application must be submitted for further processing to a counselor at the high school which the applicant attends or attended. Applicants who possess a high school equivalency diploma are required to attach a photostatic copy of the diploma to the SUNY Admission Application and mail it directly to Albany.

For both new and transfer students, final admission to the College is contingent upon the receipt of the following by the Office of Admissions:

  1. High school transcript or GED (Does not apply to non-high school degree applicants)
  2. Completion of prerequisites as required in the program of choice
  3. Official college transcripts from any institution previously attended
  4. Completion of basic skills testing or exemption from testing
Please note that New York State law requires immunization records for any student born on or after January 1, 1957. These records must be forwarded to the Health Clinic (C-122) before registration can occur.

International Students
>  Go to NCCC International Student Home Page

NCCC welcomes the opportunity to offer educational opportunities to students of different countries. Students can apply by using the SUNY Foreign Student application, available from NCCC Admissions Office. The following documentation is required before admission can be granted:

  1. High school transcript and verification of graduation from an accredited High School; students with international high school diplomas where English was not the principle language must take the TOEFL as part of the Admissions process. See No. 4
  2. Autobiographical statement detailing the goals of the student and reasons for pursuing an education at NCCC
  3. Assessment of English skills
  4. TOEFL score of 500 minimum
  5. Statement of financial support equal to or greater than current tuition and living expenses estimated by the campus for one year

It is necessary to require that completed applications for international students be received by August 1 for Fall enrollment and December 15 for Spring enrollment.

Re-Admit Students

A readmit student is one who previously attended NCCC in a matriculated status and who meets one of the following criteria:

Readmit students wishing to continue their education at NCCC in a matriculated status, must apply for Readmission in the Admissions Office. Students who readmit to the College must follow the curriculum requirements at the time of readmission. Students who were academically dismissedand wish to readmit must meet with an Admissions advisor to discuss their options.

Readmit students must also complete prerequisites as required in their program of choice before an application can be accepted.

Fresh Start

Former NCCC students whose attendance has lapsed for at least five years can apply for consideration for Fresh Start status. A Fresh Start student will receive credit for only previous courses with a C grade or better which meet degree requirements for the new program of study. Those courses will be listed as transfer courses and will not be calculated in the Fresh Start grade point average. A maximum of 50% of the required credits toward a certificate or degree can be transferred from the student's previous work at NCCC in the Fresh Start program. This is consistent with the transfer credit policy.

Students interested in the Fresh Start option must meet with an Admissions adviser. A petition must be submitted by the applicant citing the reasons for previous academic difficulties and resolution of those difficulties for the future. Request for the Fresh Start status must be approved by the Coordinator of Admissions and the Dean of Academic and Student Affairs. If Fresh Start status is granted, the following regulations apply:

  1. All grades earned at NCCC will remain a part of the transcript.
  2. For purposes of determining academic status (good standing/warning/probation/dismissal/graduation) cumulative average is determined beginning with the coursework completed after the minimum five year absence.
  3. The student must accept all current degree and divisional requirements at the time of acceptance into the Fresh Start option.
  4. As a result of being granted Fresh Start, a student will receive credit toward the total degree requirement for only those courses taken prior to the student's five year absence from NCCC in which the student earned a grade of C or better; at least 50% of the degree or certificate requirements must be completed in the Fresh Start status.
  5. The Fresh Start option is extended only once during the student's enrollment at NCCC.

Non-High School Diploma Applicants

Applicants who are interested in pursuing a certificate or degree and demonstrate an ability to benefit from an educational experience but have not completed their high school requirements may matriculate in the General Studies program.

Upon satisfactory evidence that a student who is matriculated in General Studies has completed 24 credits, the student may apply to the New York State Education Department for issuance of a General Equivalency Diploma.

Due to the nature of the program and the collegiate environment, this way of obtaining an equivalency diploma is most appropriate for persons at least 18 years of age who have experienced a break in their formal education. However, in some cases this program can meet the needs of younger students who possess the maturity and seriousness of purpose to succeed in college. All applicants under 18 years of age must be recommended to the program by their high school counselor and must have successfully completed Grade 10. Any applicant under 18 years of age must be approved by the Coordinator of Admissions. All applicants for the program must pass the reading competency test at not lower than sixth grade level before acceptance to the General Studies program can occur.

Any students attending the College on a non-matriculated basis must matriculate into General Studies and have their coursework evaluated and accepted by the College as appropriate to the General Studies program before they are eligible to apply for issuance of a General Equivalency Diploma.

Applicants without a high school diploma should contact the Admissions Office.

High School / College Articulation

A number of articulation agreements have been made between NCCC, the Orleans-Niagara BOCES and local high schools. These articulation agreements give students the opportunity to earn advanced credit or advanced placement for certain courses they take while in high school. The advantage of these articulation agreements is that students can eliminate course duplication, gain college credit while in secondary school and make the transition to college smoother.
