WHAT IS THE NCCC FOUNDATION?

The NCCC Foundation was founded and incorporated in 1987 as a non-profit corporation that raises money to provide financial assistance to enhance the College mission and future direction.

AREN'T OUR LOCAL TAX DOLLARS ALREADY SUPPORTING NCCC?

Funding for community colleges comes from tuition, the state, and from the county. These monies are not able to support the programs and facilities that meet the degree of excellence to which NCCC and our community strive to give our students. We are the Community's College.

CAN I DESIGNATE MY GIFT FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE?

Absolutely! Gifts can be given without restriction or designated to a particular area of interest. Indicate on your pledge card if you want to direct your gift to one of the major initiatives, as unrestricted, or to a specific area at the College.

HOW CAN I MAKE A GIFT TO THE CAMPAIGN?

Just complete and return your pledge card to the volunteer who visited with you. Or, you may return it to the NCCC Campaign Office in the enclosed envelope. If you have not met with a campaign volunteer, please e-mail Foundation Director Deborah Brewer at dbrewer@niagaracc.suny.edu.

HOW WILL INVESTORS BE RECOGNIZED?

Six giving levels have been established; investors will be appropriately recognized at each level. All donors will be listed in our College/Foundation Annual Report. Specific gift amounts will not be included; however, names will be listed in giving ranges. Named endowment funds and named gifts provide perpetual recognition opportunities.

WILL THE CAMPAIGN ACCEPT ANONYMOUS GIFTS?

Yes. If you would like your gift to remain anonymous, we will honor your wishes.

IS A CONTRIBUTION TO THE CAMPAIGN TAX-DEDUCTIBLE?

Yes. The NCCC Foundation maintains a 501 (C) (3) status. Gifts to the Campaign are considered tax deductible to the extent allowable by law.

HOW WILL WE KEEP DONORS INFORMED OF CAMPAIGN PROGRESS AND FUTURE USES OF MONEY?

A newsletter will be distributed to all investors as the Campaign gets underway. News releases and articles will be submitted to local and regional media. Campaign information will also be included on the NCCC web site at www.niagaracc.suny.edu.

Ways to Make a Difference Today . . .

CASH AND GIFT PLEDGE

Cash contributions are tax deductible as an itemized deduction in the year you make the donation up to a total of 50 percent of your adjusted gross income. An excess over 50 percent can be deducted over the next five years. Future cash pledges should be made either in writing or by means of a pledge card. Pledges cannot be claimed until the gift is made.

CORPORATE MATCHING GIFT PROGRAM

Many corporations match gifts to charitable institutions made by their employees. Some will match the gifts of employees, spouses and retired employees as well. Contact your human resources department to determine whether your employer has a matching gifts program. If it does, obtain your matching gift form and send it the NCCC Foundation. Once we receive the completed form, we will notify your employer of your gift.

STOCKS AND BONDS

If you donate stock that has risen in value and that you have held for more than one year, you can deduct its fair market value up to 30 percent of your adjusted gross income and owe no capital gains taxes from its transfer to the NCCC Foundation. Any excess can be carried forward for five additional years. If you have stock losses, generally you should not contribute the stock, but rather sell the stock yourself to realize the loss for tax purposes. You can then contribute the cash and take the charitable deduction.

REAL ESTATE

If you own property that is not subject to a mortgage and has appreciated in value, a charitable gift may be an attractive option. This type of gift entitles you to two benefits: first, you avoid paying capital gains; and second, in most cases, you receive a deduction for the full value of the gift. If your property has decreased in value, you should consider selling the property and contributing the proceeds to the NCCC Foundation. This allows you to receive the deduction for both the capital loss and the charitable gift.

Ways to Make a Difference in the Future . . .

YOUR WILL

One way to make a deferred gift is to include specific language in your will naming the NCCC Foundation as the recipient of your planned gift. Your will can include gifts in the form of the following:

  • cash, securities, and personal property

  • a percentage of your estate; and/or

  • the residue of your estate - property

Your estate is allowed an unlimited deduction of cash and other property that you leave to the NCCC Foundation. Please contact your tax consultant, financial planner, or attorney to help you plan the type of bequest which best suits your needs.

GIFTS OF LIFE INSURANCE

You can make a substantial gift, with modest premium payments. This is also a good use of paid-up policies that are no longer needed for family members.

RETIREMENT SAVINGS

Naming the NCCC Foundation as beneficiary of a portion of your retirement funds is another option. Be sure to contact the administrator or the person in charge of your IRA, Profit Sharing Account, or other retirement plan to list the NCCC Foundation.

Ways to Make a Creative Gift . . .

CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITIES

You give the NCCC Foundation a gift of money, stocks, bonds or other liquid assets and the NCCC Foundation will pay you or a beneficiary a fixed amount on a regular basis until death. A large part of this income is tax-free, and you also receive a charitable deduction for part of the gift.

CHARITABLE REMAINDER TRUSTS

By transferring assets to the NCCC Foundation to establish a trust, you or a beneficiary receive a lifetime income. Eventually, the remaining assets of the trust pass on to the NCCC Foundation.

CHARITABLE LEAD TRUSTS

You may transfer assets to a trust for a fixed number of years. The interest earned will go to the NCCC Foundation and later, the principal will go back to you or your beneficiaries.

RETAINED LIFE ESTATE

If you deed a house or summer home to the NCCC Foundation, you and or your spouse retain the right to live in the house for the remainder of your life and are responsible for usual expenses (taxes, utilities, maintenance etc.). You receive an immediate income tax deduction for the gift. The Foundation will most likely sell the property when you or your spouse no longer needs it.

Other Things to Consider . . .

TAX TIPS

A charitable gift to the NCCC Foundation will provide you with the satisfaction of knowing that your contribution will go to work for many students. Beyond the usefulness of the gift itself, you will receive tax benefits for your donation. Your gift should be made on or before December 31 of the year in which you wish to receive the charitable income tax deduction.

CORPORATE LIMITS

A corporation is permitted to make and deduct philanthropic investments of up to 10 percent of its taxable income. As with individuals, a corporation may carry over excess charitable contributions to the next five years.

APPRAISALS

You must obtain an appraisal for any non-cash contribution which exceeds $5,000. The appraisal summary section of IRS Form 8283 must be completed and attached to the income tax return on which the deduction is claimed. No appraisal is required for a gift of publicly traded securities for which market quotations are readily available on an established securities market.

GIFT STEWARDSHIP

Your gift will be used specifically for the purposes it was given and treated with the utmost care and confidentially per your instructions.

GIFT RECOGNITION

All gifts to the Campaign qualify for appropriate recognition from the NCCC Foundation.
