Kilgour, McDaniels Named Lacrosse Coaches
SANBORN, N.Y. (Jan. 16, 2009) — Rich Kilgour, one of the top men’s lacrosse players in Western
New York, and Brendan McDaniels, an up-and-coming collegiate lacrosse coach, have been named men’s and women’s lacrosse coaches, respectively, Niagara County Community College Athletics Director Lee Wallace announced today on the Sanborn campus.
“I am thrilled to announce Rich and Brendan as our new lacrosse coaches,” Wallace said. “Rich has built a legendary lacrosse career here in Western New York and in Canada. His knowledge of the game is unparallel. Brendan is going to be the type of coach that is tireless recruiter, a high-energy personality and a tremendous role model for our student-athletes. We fully expect to build a strong foundation for lacrosse at NCCC that will take us to the top of the Western New York Conference,” Wallace continued.
NCCC President Dr. James P. Klyczek, echoed Wallace’s sentiments regarding Kilgour and McDaniels.
“Starting two new athletic teams takes commitment, hard work, talent and luck, and I think we have found two coaches that epitomes these qualities. I believe both will put their own marks on these programs and start a strong tradition of lacrosse at NCCC.”
Kilgour and McDaniels begin their first head coaching jobs immediately with both lacrosse seasons beginning in spring 2010.
“I want to thank President Klyczek and Lee Wallace for this wonderful opportunity,” Kilgour said. “My vision for the future of NCCC men’s lacrosse is to have each student-athlete leave here having had the best experience possible academically and athletically by graduating and winning a championship.”
“I am very excited to begin building the NCCC women’s lacrosse program,” said McDaniels. “I already have a vested interest in the growth of the College so the opportunity to continue my coaching career here and start a new program in a sport I love is a win-win situation. I want to thank President Klyczek and Lee Wallace for their commitment in me to develop outstanding student-athletes and run a successful program,” McDaniels said.
Kilgour comes to NCCC as the captain and an original member of the Buffalo Bandits of the National Lacrosse League (NLL). Kilgour began his 18th season in the NLL in January and has played in eight league championship games, earning four titles in 1992, 1993, 1996 and 2008. He has also won four Mann and one Minto Cups during his career.
The Niagara Falls native attended Niagara-Wheatfield High School where he started on both the lacrosse and football fields. He also attended Nazareth College from 1988 to 1990.
McDaniels spent three seasons as head coach and administrator of the St. Mary’s High School Boys Lacrosse Club in Lancaster from 2005-07. After helping establish the program in 2005 with 39 players with no prior lacrosse experience, the Lancers appeared in two consecutive Independent Lacrosse Conference championship games in 2006 and 2007, going a combined 18-11. He also coached eight first team all-conference players with four moving on to play in college.
Away from the field, McDaniels is a highly respected lacrosse announcer. He has appeared on ESPN2, ESPN Regional, SportsNet NY, MSG, The SCORE (Canada), Comcast Sports and Time Warner Cable SportsNet. McDaniels is the analyst and fill-in play-by-play announcer for the Rochester Rattlers of Major League Lacrosse and has announced games for the Rochester Knighthawks of the NLL. This season, he will announce Buffalo Bandits home games for the NLL Network.
McDaniels, a 1998 graduate of St. Bonaventure University, was a member of the club lacrosse team. He is currently employed full-time in the NCCC Public Relations Department. He has a three-year-old son, Aaron, and resides in Amherst.
