Introduction to Animal Care
(2 Lec. hrs., 6 Lab hrs. per week) 4 Cr.
The lecture component will cover psychological needs of animals, safety
procedures, animal nutrition, sanitation and pest control. The laboratory
will take the form of on-site experience in zoo keeping and related topics
under the supervision of zoo employees and NCCC personnel. (Usually offered
Fall semester even numbered years.) Restricted to Animal Management
students.

Zoonotic Disease
(2 Lec. hrs., 6 Site Lab hrs. per week) 4 Cr.
Emphasis will be placed on animal health care including diagnosis,
treatment and prevention of disease. Students will become aware of their
role in animal health care and as support to the zoo veterinarian. The
laboratory component will consist of site experience in zookeeping under
the supervision of NCCC personnel and zoo employees. (Usually offered
Spring semester of odd numbered years.) Restricted to Animal Management
students.

Exhibit Design
(1 Lec. hr. (110 minutes/week for 7 weeks) 6 Lab hrs. (645 minutes/week for
7 weeks) 3 Cr.
A continuation of AMG 102. Students will further their hands-on
experience learning animal husbandry methods at an approved site location.
Lecture material will cover the methods and rationale used in designing and
building various exhibits, enclosures and displays. (Usually offered Summer
semesters of odd numbered years.) Restricted to Animal Management students.

Animal Reproduction
(2 Lec. hrs., 6 Site Lab hrs. per week) 4 Cr.
A continuation of AMG 103. Students will gain
further exposure in husbandry techniques through site experience. Lecture
material will introduce the student to the principles and practices of
animal reproduction and breeding. (Usually offered Fall semester of odd
numbered years.) Restricted to Animal Management students.

Conservation

This course will emphasize conservation as it applies to zoos. Students
will gain further exposure to husbandry techniques through site experience.

Animal Management students.

History of Zoos & Alternative Facilities
(1 Lec. hr. per week) 1 Cr.
This course will introduce the student to selected topics in zoo and animal
management. The history of zoological parks in western New York, the
philosophy and purposes behind animal management, the maintenance of
zoological parks, and the keeper's role in interaction with the public,
curatorial staff, volunteers and visitors will be included. (Usually
offered Fall semester of even numbered years.) Restricted to Animal
Management students.

Record Keeping
(1 Lec. hr. per week) 1 Cr.
The lecture component will include the importance of record keeping to the
daily function of the zoo, observation techniques employed and how to
interpret the observations. Various animal inventory and marking systems
will be explored. The student will be introduced to the taxonomic
identification system. (Usually offered Spring semester of odd numbered
years.) Restricted to Animal Management students.

Capture & Restraint

Lecture material wil lintroduce students to concepts, principles and
practices of wild animal capture and restraint methods. (Usually offered

Animal Training
(1 Lec. hr. per week) 1 Cr.
This course will cover the history, philosophy and importance of
alternative forms of animal facilities. Such facilities will include
propagation centers, conservation centers and ecoparks. Emphasis will be
placed on ecotourism in Rain Forest communities. (Usually offered Spring
semester of even numbered years.) Restricted to Animal Management students.

Herpetoculture
(3 Lec. hrs. per week) 3 Cr.
A course designed to introduce the student to the structure, taxonomy,
ecology, and ethology of reptiles and amphibians. Emphasis also will be
placed on their captive care, breeding and housing. (Usually offered Fall
semester of odd numbered years.) Restricted to Animal Management students or permission of instructor.

Aviculture
(3 Lec. hrs. per week) 3 Cr.
A study of the evolution, taxonomy, anatomy, physiology and behaviors of
birds. Special emphasis will be placed in those species of birds commonly
found in captivity. Additional topics will include breeding, nutrition,
collecting, transporting, housing, and displaying captive birds. (Usually
offered Spring semester of even numbered years.) Restricted to Animal
Management students or permission of instructor.

Mammal Culture
(3 Lec. hrs. per week) 3 Cr.
This course introduces the student to the fundamentals of mammalian biology
and the captive management of mammals. Emphasis will be placed on the
identification, taxonomy, evolution, anatomy and physiology, ethology and
conservation of mammals. Consideration will also be given to collecting,
housing and displaying, captive breeding and nutrition of mammals. (Usually
offered Spring semester of even numbered years.) Restricted to Animal
Management students or permission of instructor.

Aquarium Science
(3 Lec. hrs. per week) 3 Cr.
The study and practical experience in the identification, techniques of
collection, maintenance, breeding and nutritional requirements of aquatic
species. Emphasis also will be placed on the exhibition and display of
these species particularly for educational purposes. (Usually offered Fall
