Computer Information Systems

CIS 100M
Introduction to the Personal Computer
(3 Lec. hrs. per week) 3 Cr.

This course is intended for students who have little or no computer experience. Topics include an overview of personal computer hardware and software. Students will learn the basic features of Windows, and a variety of software applications (word processor, spreadsheet and presentation software) using a Windows environment. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)

Introduction to Operating Systems
(3 Lec. hrs. per week for 5 weeks or
2 Lec. hrs. per week for 7-1/2 weeks or
1 Lec. hr. per week for 15 weeks) 1 Cr.

This course is intended for students who have very little or no computer experience. Topics include an overview of personal computer hardware and software, and the use of the basic windows features and an explanation of the concepts of a Windows or Macintosh Operating System. Also available as OFT 105. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)

CIS 109M
Introduction to Database
(3 Lec. hrs. per week for 5 weeks or
2 Lec. hrs. per week for 7-1/2 weeks or
1 Lec. hr. per week for 15 weeks) 1 Cr.

This fast-paced introductory course is intended for students who have had computer experience. Basic concepts and applications of a database software program operating within windows environment will be discussed. Students will apply lecture principles at their computer workstations through exercises and projects. Hands-on exposure will provide students with practical experiences for the database software. The software being used is Access 2000. Also available as OFT 109. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)
Prerequisite: CIS/OFT 105 or permission of the Instructor.

CIS 110M
Introduction to the Internet
(1 Lec. hr. per week) 1 Cr.

Intended for any student who is interested in a first course in using the Internet. Topics include the history of the Internet, using electronic mail (email), accessing other computers, downloading files, searching the Internet, and computing ethics. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)
Prerequisite: CIS/OFT 105 or proficiency in Windows.

CIS 115M
Introduction to Spreadsheets

(3 Lec. hrs. per week for 5 weeks or
2 Lec. hrs. per week for 7-1/2 weeks or
1 Lec. hr. per week for 15 weeks) 1 Cr.
Topics include entering text, creating formulas, using functions, exporting and importing data from other applications, and creating graphs. Practical examples from a variety of sources will be used. Also available as OFT 115. (Usually offered Fall, Spring and Summer semesters.)
Prerequisite: CIS/OFT 105 or proficiency in Windows.

CIS 118M
Intermediate Spreadsheet Applications

(3 Lec. hrs. per week for 5 weeks or
2 Lec. hrs. per week for 7-1/2 weeks or
1 Lec. hr. per week for 15 weeks) 1 Cr.
Topics include problem solving, advanced functions, what if analysis, table handling, linking multiple worksheets, and graphing multiple data series. Also available as OFT 118. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)
Prerequisite: CIS/OFT 115

CIS 119M
Introduction to Computer Systems
(3 Lec. hrs. per week) 3 Cr.

A required introductory course intended for students who have selected Computer Information Systems, Computer Science or Local Area Network as their major course of study. This course can also be taken by any student interested in a first course in computing. The function of computer hardware, software, firmware, and the development of an information system will be discussed in detail. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)
Prerequisites: Successful completion of AAC 042 and MAT 004.

CIS 201M
Micro Computer Applications
(3 Lec. hrs. per week) 3 Cr.

This course is intended for students who have previous experience using various software applications. Topics will include custom installation of software, backup procedures, database implementation, advanced spreadsheet applications, Web Site development, and integrating information between applications. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)
Prerequisite: CIS 100 or CIS 119.

CIS 211M
Cobol Programming
(3 Lec. hrs. per week) 3 Cr.

The COBOL language will be used to modify and create business applications programs. Special emphasis will be placed on program design, debugging, documentation, table handling techniques, and maintenance of Sequential and Indexed Sequential files. The student is expected to be proficient in the use of at least one other programming language. (Usually offered Fall semester.)
Prerequisite: CPS 120

CIS 220M
Introduction to Visual Basic Programming
(3 Lec. hrs. per week) 3 Cr.

The purpose of this course is to introduce the Visual Basic Programming Language and its use as a user interface, and its ability to interact with databases. Topics include object-oriented programming, graphical user interface design techniques, Structured Queery Language, and ActiveX technologies. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)
