ENG 099M
Writing Workshop
(3 Lec. hrs. per week) Remedial; Non-credit course
Does not fulfill degree requirements) R-3 Cr.

The course is a workshop in writing. It will serve as a prerequisite for freshman English for those students who fall below college-level competency on an appropriate screening test. The workshop will assist students in overcoming individual problems with the development and organization of ideas, the establishment of a point of view, selection of appropriate words, usage and punctuation. Equivalent to 3 credit hours for tuition and activity fee payment, enrollment status (full- or part-time) and financial aid purposes only. Passing ENG 099 or the Writing Test is a prerequisite for ENG 101. (Usually offered Fall, Spring and Summer semesters.)

ENG 101M
Writing I
(3 Lec. hrs. per week) 3 Cr.

This course, based on writing as a process as well as rhetorical principles, is designed to develop effective non-fiction prose. Students will learn use of documentation using the Modern Language Association (MLA) format. They will use writing to promote critical thinking. (Usually offered Fall, Spring and Summer semesters.)
Prerequisites: Passing of both the Writing test (or ENG 099) and the Reading Test (or AAC 042).

ENG 102M
Writing II and Introduction to Literature
(3 Lec. hrs. per week) 3 Cr.

This course reinforces writing skills emphasized in ENG 101; presents more sophisticated writing skills, not included in 101; and introduces students to the study of literature. (Usually offered Fall, Spring and Summer semesters.)

ENG/JRN 145M
Journalism I
(3 Lec. hrs. per week) 3 Cr.

An introduction to journalism, with emphasis on writing and research skills: writing for audience, focus, conciseness, punctuation, vocabulary, semantics, connotative language and editing. Students will have hands-on experience in research, interviewing and news reporting as they work with the staff of the College newspaper. The course will also introduce students to current issues in the field including libel, privacy, freedom of the press, etc. Recommended for Liberal Arts, and Communications majors. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)
Prerequisite: ENG 101 or permission of Instructor.

ENG/JRN 146M
Journalism II
(3 Lec. hrs. per week) 3 Cr.

This is an advanced course in the higher-level writing skills required in the field of journalism (including newspapers, magazines, electronic journalism and public relations). The course will offer weekly opportunities to develop analytical and reporting skills as students produce news and feature articles for the College newspaper. Students will also produce research papers on current national issues facing journalists.

This course is recommended for students interested in a career in writing, for Liberal Arts students, especially those planning to major in English, Sociology or Communications. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)
Prerequisite: ENG/JRN 145 or permission of Humanities Division Chair.

ENG 205M
Creative Non-Fiction I
(3 Lec. hrs. per week) 3 Cr.

This course is designed for anyone who wants to learn to write well, to move from competence to effectiveness as a writer. The course focuses on nonfiction writing including memoir, profile, and personal essay. Students in the course will also work on those things that improve a writer’s style-voice; clear, tight prose; grammatical competence; syntactic confidence and versatility. Students will improve their ability to revise and edit.

The course is recommended for anyone planning to major in writing or English, anyone planning to teach, and anyone who would like to become a stronger writer. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)

ENG 206M
Creative Non-Fiction II
(3 Lec. hrs. per week) 3 Cr.

This course is a continuation of ENG 205. Students will continue to learn to revise effectively. In this course, however, students will have an opportunity to focus on a specific project designed with the instructor to allow students to explore in more depth a particular writing genre or topic. Additionally, students may choose a project that allows them to gain “hands on” experience in the Writing Center. The course is recommended for anyone who would like to write more effectively; anyone who plans to major in English or writing; anyone who plans to teach. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)

Creative Writing
(3 Lec. hrs. per week) 3 Cr.

This course will provide students with the opportunity to write within the framework of various literary forms: essays, poetry, short stories. Classes will be conducted largely as seminars in which student writing will be discussed. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)

Creative Writing II
