Origins of Western Civilization

Selected topics relative to the origins of western culture including political, social, intellectual, economic and religious traditions from the dawn of civilization through the 16th century. (Usually offered Fall semester.)

Modern Western Civilization
(3 Lec. hrs. per week) 3 Cr.

The development of western culture including political, social, intellectual and economic trends from the 17th century to the present. Topics will be selected to reflect major influences such as the French and Russian revolutions, the growth of nationalism, imperialism, the World Wars, the Cold war and the growing importance of the Third World. (Usually offered Spring semester.)

This course is a survey of the cultural, social, economic, political, and religious history of the world from the earliest river valley civilizations to the Columbian encounter with the western hemisphere.

American Women's History

This course provides a broad overview of the experiences of American women from colonial times to the present. It will examine the social, cultural, political and religious history of women of differing backgrounds. It will explore the history of women of different races, ethnicities, classes and regions.

Native American History

A survey of Native American history from the earliest human movement into the Americas through the European invasions of the sixteenth through the nineteenth centuries. This course also explores the reservation system and twentieth-century renaissance movements. Also available as ANT 310. (Usually offered Fall semester.)

American Labor History
(3 Lec. hrs. per week) 3 Cr.

Survey of American labor history from the colonial era to the present. Areas of focus include labor in pre-industrial America; antecedents of modern labor organizations; ideology, objectives and strategy of organized labor and its leadership; labor's response to industrialism and corporate capitalism; influence of legislation and federal regulatory policies upon labor; impact of urbanization and immigration upon organizing patterns; and the role of labor in national politics. Contemporary trends in labor will also be considered. (Usually offered Spring semester.)

Africans in America

The historical development of African-American culture from its African origins to the present. The course will emphasize the unique development of Black culture as well as the joint contributions all races have made to the development of American culture. Issues in African American History
(3 Lec. hrs. per week) 3 Cr.

This course examines issues facing African Americans in contemporary society. The historical development of African American culture is emphasized through images. The presentation of African American images in history and the media will be explored. Using a multi-disciplinary approach, special focus will be put on the civil rights movement, Blacks in popular culture, and other social phenomena. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)

New York and the Niagara Frontier

The history of New York State focusing on the Niagara Frontier, along with adjacent Canada, from early occupation to the present. Topics covered will include the geographic setting, the varied populations and the social, cultural, political and economic development of the state and region. (Usually offered Spring semester.)

HIS 295M
The American Frontier
(3 Lec. hrs. per week) 3 Cr.

This course is a political, cultural and intellectual survey of real and imagined Anglo-American frontiers spanning from the earliest English colonization of Ireland and the New World, through the conquest and commercialization of North America, to the perpetuation of a frontier mythology by politicians and the commercial entertainment industry during the twentieth century.
