Designed to provide "touch typing" competency skills for the nonprofessional keyboarding student. Instruction in basic alphanumeric keyboarding techniques on the microcomputer. Intended for students seeking data entry skills on the personal computer; keyboard mastery and accuracy will be the primary emphasis of this course. Geared for those at any level of computer training who wish to learn touch keyboarding skills. (Usually offered Fall, Spring and Summer semesters.)

Designed for the nonprofessional keyboarding student who has no prior keyboarding experience. Basic instruction in alphanumeric keyboarding techniques on the microcomputer for the student seeking data entry skills will be taught to provide "touch typing" competency. In addition, word processing software will be used to format and print basic business correspondence; simple reports will be introduced. (Usually offered Fall, Spring and Summer semesters.)

Designed to reinforce touch keyboarding skills and to introduce word processing skills for the nonprofessional keyboarding student. Word processing software will be used to format, edit and print basic business correspondence as well as simple reports. Advanced formatting, long document preparation with extensive editing, and table creation also will be taught. The student may be introduced to integrated software applications through discussion and demonstration. (Usually offered Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters.)
Prerequisite: OFT 101 or advanced placement.

Introduction to Operating Systems

This course is intended for students who have very little or no computer experience. Topics include an overview of personal computer hardware and software, and the use of the basic windows features and an explanation of the concepts of a Windows operating system. Introduction to Database

This fast-paced introductory course is intended for students who have had computer experience. Basic concepts and applications of a database software program operating within a windows environment will be discussed. Students will apply lecture principles at their computer workstations through exercises and projects. Hands-on exposure will provide students with practical experiences for the database software. The software being used is Access 2000. Also available as CIS 109. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)

Introduction to Word Processing
(3 Lec. hrs. per week for 5 weeks or
2 Lec. hrs. per week for 7-1/2 weeks or

This fast-paced introductory course will acquaint the student with word processing that runs in a Windows environment. Word processing is used to create professional looking documents that can be easily revised and reused. The documents can be enhanced by adding special appearance features such as lines, shading, and graphics. The software being used is Microsoft Word 2000 for Windows. This version of Microsoft Word is compatible with Windows 98 and Word 97. It is not compatible with Microsoft Works. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)
Prerequisites: OFT 105 and touch typing ability.

Intermediate Word Processing

Basic concepts of formatting, editing, and file management will be reviewed. Additional topics may include advanced formatting, merging, font changes, special tabs, indents and macros. When appropriate, spell check and thesaurus functions will be utilized. All concepts will be reinforced with applications at the computer. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)
Prerequisite: OFT 111 or permission of Instructor.

Beginning Desktop Publishing

This course is designed as an advanced course in word processing or an initial course in desktop publishing. It will offer advanced word processing functions and publishing design techniques used for desktop publishing. Functions such as typography applications, special symbols, column manipulation, line alignment guidelines, ruled line applications, page design with graphics, macro formatting and business forms with styles may be introduced. Also introduced will be design techniques for common desktop documents such as newsletters, brochures and flyers. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)
Prerequisite: OFT 112 or permission of Instructor.

Introduction to Spreadsheets

This course is intended for students who have little or no computer expeience. Topics include entering text, creating formulas, using functions, exporting and importing data from other applications, and creating graphs. Practical examples from a variety of sources will be used. Also available as CIS 115. (Usually offered Fall, Spring and Summer semesters.)
Prerequisite: OFT/CIS 105 or proficiency in Windows.

Introduction to Presentations

This fast-paced introductory course will acquaint the student with the basic features of a presentation graphics software application program. Topics will include planning, defining, creating, and modifying a presentation. Other topics will include working with text, objects and presentation graphics as well as learning how to create an on-screen slide show. This will enable the student to use the computer as a tool to reinforce the proper techniques for accessing and using presentation software; the software being used in this class is Microsoft PowerPoint. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)

Intermediate Spreadsheet Applications

Professional Keyboarding I
(2 Lec. hrs., 3 Lab hrs. per week) 3 Cr.
Development of basic touch keyboarding skills and knowledge necessary for the operation and care of the personal computer. Students shall apply this keyboarding skill and knowledge to the typing of letters, memos, and one-page manuscripts. Required minimum keyboarding speed is 30 net words per minute for three minutes. A minimum of seven such timings is necessary for successful completion of OFT 121. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)

Professional Keyboarding II

Preparation of business letters, tabulations, manuscripts and business forms; reinforcement of basic keyboarding skills and production ability to achieve speed and accuracy.Required minimum keyboarding speed is 40 net words per minute for five minutes. A minimum of ten such timings is required for successful completion of OFT 122. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)

Professional Keyboarding III

A continuation of speed and accuracy building activities utilizing more advanced keyboarding communications, including production tests and office simulation activities. Required minimum keyboarding speed is 50 net words per minute for five minutes. (Usually offered Fall semester only.)
Prerequisite: OFT 122 with a minimum C grade.

Medical Records Management

The medical record, in manual or automated form, houses the medical information that describes all aspects of patient care and also serves to protect the legal interests of the patient, health care provider and health care facility. The medical assistant is responsible for the organization of a records management system for patient files, correspondence, financial records, equipment manuals, and all other necessary business documents.
Students will not only examine the purpose and content of various medical records but also learn how to develop an efficient records management system for the filing, retrieval, transferring, protection, retention, storage,and destruction of a variety of patient records in the health care field. (Usually offered Fall semester only.)

Computerized Medical Billing

In this course the student will learn to enter data into the computer and perform computerized account management duties. Students will use a medical practice management software program to schedule patient appointments, create superbills, post patient charges and payments, produce patient ledgers, complete insurance claim forms, prepare daily deposit slips, age accounts receivable, and compile a variety of reports. Students will also be introduced to word processing application software. (Usually offered Spring semester only.)

Coding for Medical Insurance
(1 Lec. hr., 2 Lab hrs. per week) 2 Cr.
Because patient and physician reimbursement from private, state, and federal health insurance depends on accurate diagnostic and procedural coding, this course is an introduction to coding using ICD-9 and CPT-4 coding books.
Coding is the translation of medical procedures and diagnoses into a numeric system for expression in the preparation of medical insurance claims.
Students will learn how to use numerical designations in place of the usual medical terminology to describe diseases of a patient and medical services and procedures provided by the physician. (Usually offered Spring semester.)
Prerequisites: BIO 213 and MED 134.

The building of writing skills for medical professions; methods of transmitting messages through written, oral, verbal, and electronic media. Areas of study include writing fundamentals (grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, letter and report formatting); letter writing, memorandum writing; report writing; employment techniques; and communications psychology. Word Processing Applications

An introduction to word processing operations Recording, saving, retrieving, and selected features will be taught using several word processing software programs. The current software programs being taught are WordPerfect and Word for Windows. (Usually offered Spring semester.)

Administrative Office Procedures
(3 Lec. hrs. per week) 3 Cr.
The student will be encouraged to learn and perform procedures to become effective in both the operation and managerial levels required in today’s and tomorrow’s office. The course content will include theory and practice in the following: office organization; time and work management; receptionist, mail and records management duties; telephone techniques; and planning/ coordinating travel and meetings. In addition, decision-making and human relations skills will be stressed. (Usually offered Fall semester.)

Machine Transcription

This course is designed to prepare students for jobs as a machine transcriptionist in diverse settings. A textbook/tape resource package is used to teach language skills, vocabulary, formatting and transcription. Students must integrate keyboarding and equipment skills, such as the computer and transcriber, to produce mailable copy. (Usually offered Spring semester.)

This course is designed to prepare medical assistant and administrative assistant professional (medical office management focus) students for entry-level positions as medical transcriptionists and/or medical word processors. Students are prepared to transcribe a variety of authentic medical documents within the framework of the major medical specialties through the use of a textbook/tape resource package. The student’s success in the Office Technology program will be increased by providing students with information and skills needed to achieve their educational goals.
Topics will address initial assessment of editing skills, keyboarding speed, business writing skills, and PC applications; orientation to the College; overview of Office Technology programs; survival skills; and portfolio development.
