Ballroom Dance
(2 Lab hrs. per week) 1 Cr.

Traditional ballroom dances of America and Latin America are taught. These include foxtrot, waltz, cha cha, rhumba, tango, swing, rheinlander, and others. (Usually offered Spring semester.)

Country/Folk & Square Dance
(2 Lab hrs. per week) 1 Cr.

Activity course designed to practice and learn the dances of countries concentrating on a variety of folk, square and line dances with some application to the principles of movement of Rudolf Laban. Topics covered include historical, geographical and cultural influences upon folk and square dance, terminology, mechanics of various individual and group steps, rhythm patterns, movement concepts and teaching strategies. (Usually offered Fall semester.)

Co-ed Gymnastics-Tumbling
(2 Lab hrs. per week) 1 Cr.

Consists of tumbling skills/dance movements. Individual skills will be taught in progression of difficulty so that students are able to combine them into performance routines in the men’s and women’s floor events. Also covered will be demonstration routines. (Usually offered Fall semester.)

Archery
(2 Lab hrs. per week) 1 Cr.

Basic knowledge and skills of competitive target archery, including form, safety, score-keeping, terminology, care and selection of equipment. An introduction to Field Archery will be included in this course. (Usually offered Spring semester.)

PED 132B
Bowling
(2 Lab hrs. per week) 1 Cr.

Designed for a beginning bowler or one with limited knowledge and skills. The course stresses the mechanical principles involved in the approach and the techniques of spot bowling for strikes and spares. Topics covered include equipment, related terminology, etiquette and safety factors, scoring, four-step approach, delivery, aiming, and making spares and splits. Students taking this course should have an average of below 130. There is a $20 lab fee for this course. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)

PED 135B
Adventure Education
(2 Lab hrs. per week) 1 Cr.

This activity course is designed to encourage participants to develop greater self confidence and at the same time acquire a sense of trust and commitment to their classmates. Students are given the opportunity to test themselves against physical and emotional limits through exploration of a series of group and personal challenges to attain higher levels of performance. Experiences include initiatives, trust activities, team building experiences and the low and high challenge ropes course. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.) May be reserved for Physical Education majors.

Golf
(2 Lab hrs. per week) 1 Cr.

Designed for a student who would like to learn or improve golf skills. It focuses on the mechanical principles of the swing: stance, grip, alignment, rhythm, and the use of various clubs. In addition, topics covered include equipment, terminology, rules, and etiquette. (Usually offered Spring and Summer semesters.)

Physical Fitness
(2 Lab hrs. per week) 1 Cr.

Acquaints students with different methods of physiological conditioning enabling them to design their own program for a lifetime of physical fitness and wellness. Includes cardiovascular training, circuit training, conditioning, and weight training. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)

Aerobic Conditioning
(2 Lab hrs. per week) 1 Cr.

Introduction to the practices and principles of aerobic fitness. Consists of regular participation in an aerobic program as well as emphasis on the physiology of aerobic fitness, care and prevention of common injuries and class structuring. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)

PED 155B
Weight Training
(2 Lab hrs. per week) 1 Cr.

Provides the student with an understanding of the muscular system and how weight training affects it. A number of weight training methods are taught that will enable a student to design a personal program for a lifetime of fitness. The course includes the use of a fifteen-station Universal machine, cardiovascular equipment, and traditional free weights. Safe use of equipment will be covered. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)

Badminton
(2 Lab hrs. per week) 1 Cr.

Introduces the student to the racquet sport, badminton. The course includes beginning strokes and serves, court position for doubles and singles play, strategy, terminology, etiquette and rules of the game. Men’s and women’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles are played. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)

Beginning Karate
(2 Lab hrs. per week) 1 Cr.

An introduction to karate as a self defense method and as a sport; to include the history, tradition, etiquette, and fundamental skills of the martial arts. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)

Racquetball
(2 Lab hrs. per week) 1 Cr.

Introduces the fast-paced game of four-wall racquetball. It includes the basic strokes, serves, safety during play, rules, court positioning and strategy. Singles, cutthroat and doubles are played. Students are required to have a racket and eye safety equipment. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)

Tennis
(2 Lab hrs. per week) 1 Cr.

Introduces the racket sport of tennis to the inexperienced student. The grips, basic skills (forehand, backhand, flat serve, lob and volley) are introduced as well as USTA rules, conditioning, etiquette, strategy, and safety. The doubles and singles baseline games are emphasized, but net play is covered for both. (Usually offered Fall and Summer semesters.)

Softball Skills and Theory
(2 Lab hrs. per week) 1 Cr.

This course is designed to introduce the student to the modern game of softball. The course will include the acquisition of basic skills knowledge of rules as established by the WNY Softball Association, strategy and practices of good conduct. Additionally, principles of conditioning, safety, care and selection of equipment and the understanding of principles of umpiring will be incorporated into the course. (Usually offered Spring semester.)

Soccer Skills and Theory
(2 Lab hrs. per week) 1 Cr.

This course is designed to introduce the student to the modern game of soccer. The course will include the acquisition of basic skills, knowledge of rules as established by the WNY Soccer Association, strategy and practice of good conduct. Additionally, principles of conditioning, safety, care and selection of equipment and the understanding of principles of refereeing will be incorporated into the course. (Usually offered Fall semester.)

Basketball Skills and Theory
(2 Lab hrs. per week) 1 Cr.

This course is designed to introduce the student to the game of basketball. It includes the acquisition of the basic skills: passing, dribbling, shooting inside and outside, faking, pivoting, and rebounding. Also incorporated into the course are WNY Basketball Association rules, offensive and defensive strategies, conditioning, safety, equipment and apparel, principles of officiating, and principles of conduct. (Usually offered Spring semester.)

Power Volleyball
(2 Lab hrs. per week) 1 Cr.

Emphasizes preparatory activities leading to the development of the basic skills: pass, set, forearm pass, dink, spike, and block. It introduces students to offensive and defensive tactics, court coverage, USVBA/NAGWS rules and team play. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)

Yoga

An introduction to the practices of yoga with a primary emphasis on the physiological practices (Hatha Yoga), and to a lesser degree the philosophical and psychological aspects to increase physical and mental fitness. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)

Adventure Education II
(2 Lab hrs. per week) 1 Cr.

An activity course designed for individuals interested in the understanding and application of low and high ropes course activities. Participants will experience an overview of teaching strategies, safety principles, rescue techniques, programming for K-12 school systems and develop experience on the low and high ropes course. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters). Prerequisite: PED 135

PED 275B
Lifeguard Training with Advanced First Aid / CPR
(2 Lec. hrs., 2 Lab hrs. per week) 3 Cr.

Focuses on the skills, techniques, and knowledge needed by students to achieve certification by the American Red Cross for a Lifeguard-Training certificate. Waterfront Lifeguard Training is also included. It will prepare a student as a caregiver in First Aid and as a CPR Professional Rescuer, which includes AED training. It also emphasizes the importance of a safe, healthy lifestyle, and knowledge to prevent lifestyle-related injuries and illnessess. American Red Cross guidelines and sanctions are adhered to. (Usually offered Spring semester.)
Prerequisite: Must be able to swim 500 yards continuously using front crawl and breaststroke.

PED 401 - 435B
Intercollegiate Athletics
(2 Lab hrs. per week) 1 Cr.

Student-athletes may earn one academic credit for each semester of participation on each intercollegiate athletic team, with a grade of S/U. Students may receive a maximum of 2 credits of participation on each intercollegiate athletic team by fulfilling all educational requirements of the sport(s) which they may elect to participate. Credit for intercollegiate athletics fulfills the 2 credit HPE requirement. (Seasonal) Prerequisite: Try-outs for team membership.
