WNY Resident Jerry Canada Establishes Scholarship for Niagara County Community College

Scholarship for Niagara County Community College

December 20, 2013

Jerry Canada has established The Canada Family Culinary Scholarship at Niagara County Community College in honor of his father, Jerry Canada Sr. and his aunt, Joan F. Canada. The endowed scholarship will offer tuition assistance to students who are enrolled in academic programs offered by the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute.

The scholarship was established in honor of his family's appreciation for the culinary arts. Although lacking any formal training in the food industry, both very much enjoyed the creative and social aspects that exist around a well-prepared meal. According to Jerry, both individuals would be impressed by the new Niagara Falls Culinary Institute, its potential to have a positive impact on Niagara Falls and the opportunities it presents to students aspiring for a professional career in the foodservice field. It is Jerry's hope that this scholarship will enable individuals who might not otherwise be able to attend the Institute an opportunity to do so with limited financial burden.

NCCC Foundation Director, Deborah Brewer said, "On behalf of Niagara County Community College and the NCCC Foundation, we are thankful for the generous donation from Mr. Canada and we are proud to offer another scholarship opportunity to students." To apply for this scholarship, applicants must be a graduate of a Niagara County high school, must be a full time incoming student who has applied for enrollment in a culinary related program and must have and maintain a 2.5 grade point average in their culinary program. The scholarship is based on financial need and academic performance. The Canada Family Culinary Scholarship will be awarded to an incoming student for four consecutive semesters as long as the selected student maintains the academic requirements. To apply, please visit NCCC's scholarship webpage at http://www.niagaracc.suny.edu/scholarships/. The award will be offered again for the fall 2014 semester.

Jerry Canada is President of Harris Computer Systems Public Sector and Schools. He and his wife, Elizabeth, along with their two sons reside in Western New York.
