CAREERS IN HEALTH STUDIES:


An Associate’s in Science degree in Health Studies can prepare you for a career in Public Health and Community Health, Industrial Health, Health Services and Education. Careers in these fields are as intriguing as they are varied.

Health Studies Career Outlook


Public & Community Health

Environmental Science is concerned with the relationships between the characteristics of the natural environment (air, water, soil, chemicals) and mental and physical health.

Employment is available in government, public and private organizations and industry. Health Administrator, Public Health Nurse, Nutritionist, Social Work, Product Safety.


Industrial Health

Occupational Safety and Health professionals seek to minimize ill health, safety issues such as injury due to poorly designed work spaces, and unsafe work environments. Their goal is to prevent and control these health problems.

Employment opportunities range from medium size (less than 500 employees) to large industrial companies with multiple sites. Safety Manager, Ergonomics Specialist.


Health Services

Employment in the health services industry is projected to increase 26% through 2010, compared to an average of 15% for all industries. The health care industry combines medical technology and the human touch.

Public Health Nurses provide health counseling and education to individuals, families and communities.

Preventive Medicine specialists manage programs in disease prevention, control of patient care, and identifying safety hazards in the workplace are one aspect of preventive medicine. In addition specialists provide preventive care services to underserved and high-risk populations targeting ethnic, racial and economic minorities.

Health Educators

Communities, schools and worksites employ highly motivated individuals to identify social, health, and healthcare delivery needs of a population. Employment of Health Education Specialists is through health promotion programs in communities, schools and worksites.

Certified Personal Trainers educate their clients to take positive steps toward total wellness. Those holding an associate’s degree in Health Studies are professionals with credentials from a national certification and a degree in the field.

Teacher Education

Health Education Teachers strive to enhance student’s awareness of and encourage them to actively work toward better health Employment opportunities are in junior high (6th-8th grade) and high school (9th – 12th grade)

Minimal Bachelors Degree with certification in Health Education.
Masters Degree in Education expected within five years.

College and University positions involve classroom teaching, laboratory work, research, and publication. Masters degree required.

Epidemiologists deal with the causes, frequency, distribution and control of disease in populations. Epidemiologists in colleges teach, do research, and perform clinical studies. This information is used to develop new or improved measures for disease prevention, therapy and rehabilitation. A master’s degree is preferred.
