 The Career  

Medical Assistants are multi-skilled allied healthcare professionals who perform a wide range of roles in physician's offices, clinics, hospitals, and other health care settings. They are cross-trained and are proficient in a multitude of administrative and clinical duties. Their versatility makes them highly employable and they are widely viewed by doctors as vital members of the healthcare delivery team. The Bureau of Labor & Statistics shows Medical Assisting as the number one fastest growing positions in the United States through 2012. The Medical Assistant program is nationally accredited by the Commision on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), on recommendation of the Curriculum Review Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants Endowment (AAMAE). Graduates are eligible to sit for the certification exam leading to the credential as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA).

Administrative Duties
  • Scheduling appointments, arranging for hospital admission and laboratory services.
  • Handling billing, coding, bookkeeping and insurance forms.
  • Purchasing and maintaining supplies and equipment.
Clinical Duties
  • Taking and recording vital signs and medical histories.
  • Preparing patient for and assisting with examination.
  • Collecting and preparing lab specimens or performing basic lab tests.
  • Authorizing prescriptions and drug refills with pharmacy as directed by physician.
  • Performing phlebotomy and EKGs


 Facilities  

In addition to the traditional classrooms, laboratories, and multimedia classrooms, the NCCC Medical Assistant program maintains a fully functional clinical laboratory setting for performing EKGs, phlebotomy, respiratory testing, blood serum analysis, urinalysis, microscopy and more. The administrative laboratory houses computers for medical billing, coding, and transcription.

All students receive hands-on experience engaging the acquisition of skills necessary for entry level in the chosen career.
