 The Career  

U.S. Department of Labor statistics project Computer Information Systems related occupations to be among the fastest growing occupations from 2004 - 20012. Employment is expected to increase at a much faster than average rate as organizations adopt increasingly sophisticated technologies.The rapid spread of computer and information technology has generated a need for highly trained workers to design and develop software and information systems.

 The NCCC Approach 

The Computer Information Systems program is designed to provide students with the first two years of a baccalaureate Computer Information Systems program. The Computer Information Systems program is offered as a full-time or part-time program. All required courses are offered in both a traditional classroom setting and online. Students can choose from courses offered in the classroom, online, or choose a combination of both to best suit their needs.

Courses in the curriculum utilize current software and the latest industry standards. Courses offered include:
  • C++
  • Java
  • Javascript
  • Visual Basic
  • Game Programming
  • UNIX
  • Excel
  • Access
  • HTML
  • Computer Network Administration
  • Computer Network Installation
Students will have access to the College's modern computer facilities which includes the use of a personal computer for each student to use during class. Computer labs are also available for students to complete work outside of class and they are located at convenient locations around the campus.

Class sizes are limited to 18, resulting in an ideal student/faculty ratio for intense interaction.

 Admission 

Apply under SUNY Code #1171. Students admitted in September and January.

The Computer Information Systems program is offered as a full-time or part-time program. All required courses are offered in both a traditional classroom setting and online. Students can choose from courses offered in the classroom, online, or choose a combination of both to best suit their needs.

 Dual Admissions 

NCCC has Dual Admission agreements that provide seamless transfer to the following schools:
  • Buffalo State - CIS
  • Medaille College - CIS
  • State University of New York at Buffalo - MIS

 
 Minimum Degree Requirements 

  1. A total of at least 62 credit hours with a minimum Curriculum Grade Point Average of 2.0. Academic Foundations courses do not count toward the degree.
  2. Computer/Information Systems: A minimum of 22 credit hours to include:
    • CIS   119 Introduction to Computer Systems*
    • CPS 120 Programming Logic I**
    • CPS 130 Programming Logic II
    Plus 12 credit hours of Computer Science (CPS) or Computer Information Systems (CIS) or Local Area Networks (NET), of which no more than 3 credit hours can be NET. CPS and CIS courses must have a number of 200 or higher.
  3. Business: A minimum of 6 credit hours to include:
    • ACC 116 Financial Accounting
    • ACC 117 Accounting Fundamentals for Management
  4. Free Electives: A minimum of 2 credit hours.
  5. Health/Physical Education: A minimum of 2 credit hours.
  6. Humanities/Fine Arts Electives: A minimum of 12 credit hours to include:
    • ENG 101 Writing I*
    • ENG 102 Writing II & Introduction to Literature
    • ____ ___ Humanities Elective
    • ____ ___ Fine Arts Elective
    (Fine Arts electives are courses prefixed by ART, FAD, MUS, THA.)
    (Humanities electives are courses prefixed by ELA, ENG*, FRE, GER, HUM, ITA, JRN, LAN, LIT, PHI, SLA, SPA.)
  7. Liberal Arts Electives: A minimum of 6 credit hours.
  8. Mathematics: A minimum of 6 credit hours to include:
    • MAT 164 Introduction to Statistics*
    • MAT ___ Mathematics Elective* except MAT 104 and MAT 106
  9. Social Sciences: A minimum of 6 credit hours.
