The Career
The certificate program in Local Area Networks (LAN) will educate students to become part of one of the fastest growing areas in the computer field.
The certificate in Local Area Networks will provide students with a comprehensive background in LANs. Graduates will be able to obtain
entry-level employment with a job title such as computer network administrators, computer network technician and PC support technician.
The program will provide a formal education in Local Area Networks for new students as well as computer professionals currently looking
to upgrade their skills.

The NCCC Approach
|
Classes will focus on LAN setup, LAN administration (Novell and Windows NT), LAN installation, network protocols, computer hardware,
software installation, operating systems, troubleshooting, upgrading and maintenance.
Students wishing to attain an associate degree may do so by continuing study in the associate in science Computer Individual Studies program.

Admission
|
Apply under SUNY Code #1401. The LAN certificate program is offered as a full-time or part-time program. Full-time students are
encouraged to start in September while part-time students are encouraged to start in January. Courses may be offered day and/or
evening each semester.
It is recommended that students follow the typical program layouts in order to achieve the most successful path in completing the
LAN certificate. Not following course sequencing and course availability may negatively alter a student’s timeline for graduation.
Minimum Degree Requirements (LAN)
- A total of at least 32 credit hours with a minimum Curriculum Grade Point
Average of 2.0. Academic Foundations courses do not count toward the
certificate.
- Telecommunications: A minimum of 15 credit hours to include:
- NET 105 Data Communications
- NET 110 LAN Administration
- NET 215 LAN Administration II
- NET 220 Advanced Protocols in Networking
- NET 230 LAN Installation
- Computer/Information Systems: A minimum of 6 credit hours to include:
- CIS 119 Introduction to Computer Systems
- CIS 225 UNIX Operating System
- Electrical Technology: A minimum of 6 credit hours to include:
- CIS/ELT 157 Principles of PC Operation and Servicing I
- CIS/ELT 158 Principles of PC Operations & Servicing II
- Communications: A minimum of 3 credit hours to include:
- SPE 101 Speech Communications or
- SPE 103 Interpersonal Communications or
- BUS 229 Business Communications
- Open Elective: Two credit hours selected through advisement.
