NCCC Pair Honored with Chancellor's Award
SANBORN, N.Y. (April 7, 2009) — Two of Niagara County Community College’s brightest, Lori Baldwin (North Tonawanda) and Thomas Chiappone (Lockport), were honored today with the 2009 Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence in Albany.
The award acknowledges students who have received recognition for student excellence by demonstrating and being recognized for the integration of academic excellence with other aspects of their lives, which may include leadership, community service, arts, athletics and career achievement.
Baldwin, who graduated this past December with a degree in human services, has worked for the past 12 years with developmentally and learning disabled students. A single parent, Baldwin completed her degree attending part time and working full time. She also volunteers her time with the Meadow School and Opportunities Unlimited while helping with NCCC activities for fundraising and family literacy nights. The seven-time Dean’s List honoree is a member of the Human Services Club, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and the NCCC chapter of the National Society of Leadership and Success.
Chiappone, who graduated this past December with a degree in criminal justice, is now an active member of the Niagara County Sheriff Department Mounted Patrol Division and has served as a missionary for his church to the Crow Indian Reservation in Montana to assist with development on their reservations. While at NCCC, Chiappone was the president of the Criminal Justice Club, helping the group raise $2,500 to tour the Capital and FBI headquarters in Washington, D.C. The three-time Dean’s List honoree was also a member of the NCCC chapter of the National Society of Leadership and Success and has participated in college sponsored food drives for Community Missions.
Baldwin and Chiappone were two of 238 students from SUNY campuses throughout the State to be honored today. The average grade-point average for all the recipients was 3.77.
