NCCC Board of Trustees Approves Athletics Department Plan

SANBORN, N.Y. (Oct. 15) — The Niagara County Community College Board of Trustees approved a motion today for a three-year upgrade plan in the athletics department.

The projected cost for the three-year plan would be $376,870 with the first year’s cost of $155,230 being the most signification amount.

Funding for the plan would come from the College’s strategic plan, increased enrollment with the addition of new sports, increasing the student athletic fee to $46 for full-time and $21 for part-time students, an athletic fund balance, new athletics department fundraising initiatives and new NCCC Foundation funding.

“This plan helps the athletics department serve the College’s mission. Our first priority in expanding our athletics program is to foster a sense of community among our students and to insure that a full college experience is available to all our students,” NCCC President Dr. James P. Klyczek said. “Athletics hasn’t received the funding necessary to insure that a broad range of opportunities are available. Now, combined with our excellent academic programs and new housing, our expanding athletic program and continued affordability will reinforce even more that NCCC is the smart place to start.”

The plan includes adding six sports over the next three years — men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s cross country and men’s and women’s swimming. The addition of the six sports would add approximately 85 to 90 new student-athletes in some of Western New York’s most popular sports played.

“In my interactions with high school students, not having a variety of sports, especially sports played in the Western New York high schools, really puts NCCC behind in attracting future students,” Board of Trustee member Arthur Pappas said.

In addition to the new sports, athletic scholarships for the three Division I and II teams (men’s and women’s basketball and wrestling) would be increased each of the three years, and three full-time coaching positions and two full-time administrative positions would be added.

Outdoor athletics facilities would be upgraded and renovated until the college master plan is implemented.

“This is great news,” NCCC Athletics Director Lee Wallace said. “Our staff and coaches work really hard, and anything we can do to make them more efficient, effective and competitive can only help our student-athletes while they are Trailblazers and as members of the community.”
