unseenamerica NYS Photography Exhibit at NCCC

SANBORN, N.Y. (Sept. 10, 2008) — Unseenamerica NYS, an exciting photography exhibit celebrating the richness of working life in Niagara Falls, opens at the Niagara County Community College Art Gallery on Thursday and runs through Oct. 10.

Unseenamerica NYS is part of an innovative arts project during which relatively unseen members of our community document their own experiences and describe their worlds with the assistance of professional photographers and writers.

The exhibit brings together stories of a Brazilian veterinarian, a union crane operator, a nurse’s aide, a furniture refinisher, a hair stylist, a student and other workers in the Niagara region.
During the project, cameras were given to working people and they were allowed to work together with a professional photographer to document their lives through photographs, short poems and essays.

The exhibit’s opening reception, featuring NCCC faculty member and photographer Kevin Kline who assisted with the Unseenamerica NYS project, will take place from 12:30 to 2 p.m.  Kline will speak about his project experiences at 12:40 p.m.

Unseenamerica NYS is part of the NYS Workforce Development Institute, a program that supports organized labor and working families through education and training programs, cultural activities, family support services, information, and referral, economic and public policy research, program development and advocacy.

The Unseenamerica NYS exhibit will be on display at the NCCC Art Gallery on Mondays and Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
