SANBORN, N.Y. – Niagara County Community College was host to thirty-one local high school English teachers on Tuesday, January 12th, as part of NCCC’s program to work toward better curriculum alignment of English, reading and writing between high schools and the colleges.
“The response from high schools has been much better than we anticipated,” said Luba Chliwniak, Vice President of Academic Affairs at NCCC. “One of our local high schools sent five teachers, which is an example of the cooperation we received.” The day was coordinated by Lydia Ulatowski, Assistant to the Vice President of Academic Affairs.
The teachers spent the morning listening to Dr. Denise David, Coordinator of the English/Writing Center at NCCC and then met with Mrs. Kathleen Parrish, Humanities Division Chairperson at NCCC before lunch. The afternoon session included a session with Dr. Ian Stapley on conducting research and citing sources and another with Dr. Marc Pietrzykowski on judging scholarly sources. The afternoon finished with a tour of the department and library.
This NCCC event is in response to the P-20 movement across the country and the P-20 initiative being promoted by SUNY. P-20 stands for Pre-Kindergarten through Masters Degree education which the intent is for seamless education through elementary and high school, college and university without duplicating/repeating courses and to reduce the need for remedial instruction at colleges and universities for entering students.
NCCC is planning to do a similar event for high school math teachers again coordinated by Lydia Ulatowski. “I think this is a noteworthy program which brings together the college and the local high schools to serve “our” collective students,” added Vice President Luba Chliwniak.
