Fresh Start

If you have previously attended classes at NCCC, but your enrollment has lapsed for at least five years, you may apply for Fresh Start status. If this is granted, you will receive credit for only previous courses with a C grade or better which meet degree requirements for your new program of study.
Those courses will then be listed as transfer courses and will NOT be calculated in the Fresh Start grade point average. A maximum of 50% of the required credits toward a certificate or degree can be transferred from your previous work at NCCC in the Fresh Start program.
You may obtain a Fresh Start application from the Admissions Office. It is then reviewed with you and forwarded to the Dean of Academic Affairs for approval. If Fresh Start status is granted, the following regulations apply:
  1. All grades earned at NCCC will remain a part of your transcript.
  2. For purposes of determining academic status (good standing/warning/probation/dismissal/graduation) the overall and curriculum grade point average is determined beginning with the course work completed after the minimum five-year absence.
  3. You must fulfill all current degree/certificate and divisional requirements current at the time of acceptance into the Fresh Start option.
  4. As a result of being granted Fresh Start, you will receive credit toward the total degree/certificate requirements for only those courses taken prior to your five year absence from NCCC in which you earned a grade of C or better; at least 50% of the degree or certificate requirements must be completed in the Fresh Start status.
  5. The Fresh Start option is extended only once during your enrollment at NCCC.
Keep in mind that Fresh Start is not always necessary or desirable. For example, with or without Fresh Start, you need to repeat required courses that you may have failed in the past.
Also, if you had high grades for some courses, you may want them to be included in determining your grade point average. An admissions advisor will speak with you upon application for this program.

Grade Point Average

Your grade point average (GPA) results from the number of quality points (or grade points) divided by the number of credit hours.

Quality points (or grade points) are points assigned to the grade earned, i.e. A=4,... (see grading table above.)

NCCC uses two different GPA’s:
  1. Cumulative grade point average (cum GPA) – the GPA from all the courses you have taken at NCCC which is displayed on your academic transcript.
  2. Degree grade point average (degree GPA) – the GPA from ONLY those courses taken which apply toward your degree program (or major) which is used for graduation.
Graduation at NCCC is based on a 2.00 minimum Degree GPA. If you have switched your major or taken coursework outside your degree program, it is possible some of these courses will not apply to your Degree GPA.

Example:

Grades earned:
PSY 110, A, 3 credits
CIS 100, B+, 3 credits

Quality points:
PSY 110 (A = 4 pts x 3 credits) = 12 pts
CIS 100 (B+ = 3.33 x 3 credits) = 9.99 pts

GPA: 21.99 (total quality points) divided by 6 (total credit hours) = 3.67

Graduation

Printable Form: Graduation Application for Degree
> Printable Form: Graduation Application for Certificate

All students planning to graduate must apply for graduation in the Registration & Records Office (A-201) during their last semester of enrollment. A processing fee of $30 is also due at time of application, whether or not the student plans to attend the ceremony. Filing deadlines are published throughout the campus, as well as the course register. Failure to file by deadline will result in the delay of your diploma and/or certificate.

Please note there is one formal cap/gown graduation ceremony in May. ALL potential graduates from Spring, in addition to those graduates from Summer and Fall, are given the opportunity to attend this ceremony typically held the third Saturday in May.

Diplomas/certificates are NOT issued on stage at the May ceremony as graduation evaluations take place after commencement. Therefore, all potential Spring graduates are allowed to cross the stage in May, along with those graduates from Summer and Fall. All students will receive a blank diploma cover and tassel, and Spring graduates will receive their actual diploma/certificate in the mail during the month of July.

If you choose not to attend commencement, your diploma/certificate will be mailed to you. However, you will need to attend the May commencement ceremony if you want a diploma cover or tassel. These items are not mailed or distributed after the ceremony.

Degree candidates must satisfactorily fulfill degree requirements specified for the curriculum in which you are matriculated. Candidates are also required to attain a minimum grade point average of 2.0 in the curriculum from which you are graduating, must be recommended for graduation by a faculty member (advisor), and must have met all financial obligations assessed by the college.

If you plan to receive two associate's degrees from NCCC, you must successfully complete the degree requirements for each degree AND complete a minimum of 30 credit hours beyond the requirements of the first degree.

Academic honors are based on the following curriculum GPA:
3.30 - 3.59 With Merit
3.60 - 3.79 With Distinction
3.80 - 4.00 With High Distinction
