HAZARDOUS WASTE OPERATOR & EMERGENCY RESPONSE SUPERVISOR
(OPEN TO THE PUBLIC)
8 HOURS Kodak course: 6471 The course provides participants with the required training and information under 29 CFR 1910.120 for on-site supervisors at hazardous waste sites and emergency response. Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to recognize the need to follow OSHA regulations and understand related HAZWOPER requirements, describe work site characterization and plan a site safety and control program. In addition the supervisor may need to work under the Local Critical Incident Response Plan designed under the national NIMS plan. For both emergency response and hazardous waste sites the supervisor needs to recognize work site hazards, categorize the characteristics and hazards associated with chemicals or other threats. These additional hazards include biological, radiological and explosive threats. A better understanding in the basic principles of toxicology and potential human risks to these threats are presented, recognizing the purpose, importance, and limitations of personal protective equipment, and identifying various types of protective equipment for face, head, foot, and hand protection. The importance and provisions of a medical surveillance program is stressed before PPE is selected. Topics covered also include:
Participants in class describe facility concerns and the need for proper training on safe work practices. Practice exercises such as confined space rescue are designed and practiced if the facility space permits. These exercises build dependability, teamwork, and safe work practices during this hands-on training. They also help to demonstrate decontamination principles when utilizing proper procedures for the use of PPE. At the conclusion of this training participants are asked to review their responsibilities as supervisors. New procedures, policies or work rules may result based on changing federal and state regulations, evolving community response, or changing company resources. A living emergency response plan will help the supervisor to respond effectively and safety for everyone. Class size is limited to 15 students. Training is conducted in building 28, classroom SB-1.
