Brightspace Essentials For Faculty

Brightspace is the Learning Digital Learning Environment that SUNY has selected as a system-wide tool. This tool allows for the administration, documentation, tracking, reporting, and delivery of courses for all modalities of instruction; face-to-face, online, hybrid, hyflex and blended.

To login into Brightspace:

Online Learning Teaching Academy in conjunction with the SUNY DLE Team has built, continues to run, and has provided recorded sessions for faculty to learn how to use this new system. Below are many resources that you can choose from based on your learning skills, and the choice of training methods that best suits your way of learning (asynchronous, live training, written material, videos, and recorded sessions).

Getting Started / Creating Content / Prep New Semester

Brightspace Pre-Flight Course “Go Live” Checklist
The Brightspace Pre-Flight Course “Go Live” Checklist will provide you with a copy of the checklist with editing rights to keep track of your course creation.

 

Building Content

  1. Start from scratch (recommended)
    This document will show you how to download the NCCC Asynchronous Template and import the content into a Brightspace course.
    You will use the tools that you learned about in the SUNY DLE Training that you participated in to build your course content.
  1. Import a Blackboard course into a Brightspace course
    This document will show you how to import course content from a zipped Bb course shell into a Brightspace course shell
    Recorded session: steps you through the export from Bb and import into Brightspace. Recording on how to attach assignments, discussions, and quizzes to the Grade Book.
  1. Copy a Brightspace Course into Another Brightspace Course

Asynchronous Training Course:

This course is divided into 9 modules and is designed to give you the knowledge and skills to use the Brightspace learning environment to build and deliver digital course materials, communicate effectively with learners, and effectively manage your grades and reports.
To locate this course go to Brightspace and you should see this course listed in the widget called My Courses and open SUNY DLE Brightspace Asynchronous Modules course.

Merging Courses – submit an OIT Help Desk ticket. Specify what course you want as the “Parent” course (this is the course where content will be placed) and specify what course(s) will be “Child” courses.  The Child course(s) will be merged into the Parent course.

Virtual Classroom & Video Assignments in Brightspace

Virtual Classrooms

The Virtual Classrooms tool in Brightspace allows you to: Schedule, hold, and record live video conferencing sessions without ever leaving Brightspace. Give distance education courses an engaging classroom experience using real-time video-based live communication between instructors and students.

Video Assignments

Brightspace by D2L has an integrated feature called the Video Assignment Tool or Bongo. This can be used to implement structured, video-based assessments that evaluate learners of speeches, foreign languages, demonstrations, class projects, filmmaking and more.
