Dawn Wylke

Dawn Wylke

Principal, Lockport High School

“The relationship between secondary and post-secondary education is imperative to helping our students determine the next phase of their lives.”

Mrs. Wylke has seen some of her students graduate with enough credits to earn an Associate’s degree while still in high school.  Taking college courses is a financial gain for the student and his/her family.  They give students a taste of the curriculum they will experience once enrolled in a college program. The teachers and students take CAP very seriously.  Courses are taught to a high level; including content, expectations, deadlines – everything!  Offering college courses at Lockport High School establishes the school as one that offers students a variety of course options. There are over 33 college courses offered that extend through multiple departments.  Whatever interest level a student has, he/she has the opportunity to get a taste of college.  Mrs. Wylke believes that by taking college courses in high school, her students are inspired, become more independent and responsible.  There is a great deal of connectivity.

Brayden Velia

Alumni, Lockport High School

“You don’t have to be the best student to take college courses in high school, but you have to make the effort.”

As per Tim Notke, “Hard work beats talent. When talent fails; work hard.”

Brayden hopes to attend SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) in the fall and he feels that by taking CAP courses at Lockport High School, he had the opportunity to see firsthand how challenging college courses are and understands the level of effort that is required to do well.  At Lockport, CAP courses are plentiful, the staff and administration are very helpful and there is financial help too.

Delaney Adams

Alumni, Lockport High School

“Taking college courses in the comfort of my high school has made for a great transitional period prior to college.”

Delaney hoped to earn as many college credits during her time at Lockport High School, namely because they are cheaper yet the coursework is elevated and rigorous.  Delaney knows that it is the same rigor as courses offered on campus.  Her instructors have been helpful every step of the way.  They reinforce course requirements, provide a strict timeline, and follow a college syllabus.

Joe Spero

English Teacher, Lockport High School

“I always try to foster, in my students, a desire to become better writers. I encourage them to learn the opposing viewpoint and engage the other side. By reading more carefully and thoroughly, with effort, one will become a stronger writer.”

Mr. Spero teaches English at Lockport High School.  He teaches the ENG 101, Writing I course for 3 college credits. There he fosters complexity and nuance.  Students must take into account, the fact that there are viewpoints other than their own, and to truly understand an issue, one must be reflective.   Students learn to become better readers and in doing so, become better writers.  College-level writing helps students become independent and critical thinkers.

Logan Wendt

Senior, Lockport High School

“CAP courses have definitely improved my critical thinking skills.  They make you think more deeply about ordinary things and connect them to real life.”

Logan believes that taking college courses in high school is smart to do.  He can earn college credits that are cheaper and will transfer to college when it is time for him to go.  Logan believes that the course difficulty is a great introduction to his college career.   He has found everyone at Lockport High School to be very supportive and encouraging.  Logan recommends taking college courses in high school.
