Future Leaders Liberty Partnerships Hosts Summer Camps at SUNY Niagara

By News Archive

August 28, 2020

SUNY Niagara is home to one of forty-seven highly successful Liberty Partnerships Programs throughout New York State. Sponsored by a Department of Education Grant, this program currently serves over 280 students in Niagara County. The Future Leaders Liberty Partnerships Program at SUNY Niagara provides year-round college and career planning, mentoring, leadership, service-learning, community engagement, wellness, and social/emotional development to students.

Despite the global pandemic, the Future Leaders Liberty Partnerships at SUNY Niagara safely hosted two virtual summer camps for 40 students. The first camp, designed for teenagers, was a collaborative effort between the Future Leaders Liberty Partnerships Program at SUNY Niagara and the University of Buffalo. Students in grades 9-12 had the opportunity to join the inaugural virtual camp, “Connect 2020: Career Readiness Speaker Series.” The camp focused on helping students develop greater knowledge of career options as they prepare to enter college or the workforce. Students were captivated as they were introduced to numerous guest speakers, including a senior research scientist based in China, a retired local chief of police, and the Director of Economic Development for Erie County. Breakout sessions focused on resiliency, goals, and the effect the pandemic has on their lives. Building relationships with their peers, instructors, and presenters empowered students with both technology and leadership skills to strategically embark on their career paths.

The second camp was created for students in grades 5 through 8 and focused on strengthening literacy. Each student received a care package that included two books, planned activities, and exclusive Liberty Partnerships apparel. Students met weekly via Zoom to participate in roundtable discussions, connect with their peers, and received one-on-one conferencing with their camp facilitators.

The Future Leaders Liberty Partnerships Program at SUNY Niagara is now enrolling new students in grades 6 through 8 who reside within partner school districts of Niagara Falls, Lockport, and Niagara Wheatfield. Please contact Program Director, Jamie Reid, via email at jreid@niagaracc.suny.edu or by phone at (716) 614-6891 to reserve a spot for your student. This program is free and the educational rewards are many.

Drone operator

SUNY Niagara Selected for FAA Training Program

By News Archive

August 19, 2020

Today SUNY Niagara announced the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had selected its Drone Operator Training Program for the Unmanned Aircraft Systems-Collegiate Training Program or the UAS-CTI.

“Offering coveted FAA-accredited drone operator training represents a significant step forward in our campus workforce training initiatives. Through this new partnership, the program will be taken to new heights as participants graduate with industry-recognized credentialing embodying the gold-standard in unmanned aviation of tomorrow.” Karen Kwandrans, Ed.D. AVP, Workforce Development.

The FAA’s UAS-CTI program recognizes institutions that prepare students for careers in unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), commonly referred to as drones. To qualify for the initiative, schools must offer a bachelor’s or associate degree in UAS or a degree with a minor, concentration, or certificate in UAS. Schools must provide curriculum covering various aspects of UAS training, including hands-on flight practice, maintenance, uses, applications, privacy concerns, safety, and federal policies concerning UAS.

“Partnering with FAA in Unmanned Aircraft Systems represents the latest in an ongoing effort to position the College at the forefront in aerospace education. We are pleased to be a sole center of excellence in providing this credential for nearly the entire northeastern United States.” – William Murabito, Ph.D. President, SUNY Niagara.

SUNY Niagara, founded in 1962, is a two-year institution of higher education accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and is the only public institution of post-secondary education in Niagara County. SUNY Niagara seeks to provide the people of Niagara County and the surrounding area with high quality, affordable education in diverse areas of the curriculum. The institution’s 50 degree and certificate programs are designed to enable its graduates to transfer to four-year degree programs or enter the workforce with skills that will enhance their career opportunities and contribute to the growth of the local economy. The current overall student enrollment at SUNY Niagara is 4,981 students.

SUNY Niagara launches new website

By News Archive

July 28, 2020

SUNY Niagara is busy preparing for the fall semester, which will include enhanced online offerings for students who prefer to stay at home to continue their studies.  In a time when online technology is increasingly important, SUNY Niagara is also planning to launch a brand new website on Saturday, August 1.  While the website has been in the works for over a year, the past few months have proven how important it is to provide updated, accessible content that is easy to navigate.

Features of the new website include more cohesive, consistent branding throughout with clearer paths to departmental information and campus resources.  More efficient navigation has been implemented to allow for audience-specific content to be accessed by current students, potential students, family members of students, faculty and staff, and community members.  Additionally, visitors to the site can enjoy one-click connectivity to SUNY Niagara social media pages and they can access a feedback form to provide input to assist in future improvements.

To celebrate the launch of the new site, an online scavenger hunt is planned starting on Monday, August 3, and running through Friday, August 7.  Participants in the scavenger hunt are entered to win an SUNY Niagara branded prize pack.  To find out more about the contest and view the new website, visit http://niagaracc.suny.edu/.
