New Building at SUNY Niagara to House Niagara County Law Enforcement Academy

By News Archive

May 02, 2022

A new training facility for the Niagara County Law Enforcement Academy (NCLEA) will be built on the Sanborn campus of SUNY Niagara.  An estimated $2.27 million for the building was appropriated in the SUNY building fund adopted by the state budget passage a few weeks ago.  Last fall, the Niagara County Legislature voted to allocate up to $3 million from the county’s American Rescue Plan funds for the construction project.  The total anticipated project cost is approx. $4.54 million.

After a decade at Niagara University, the NCLEA relocated to SUNY Niagara in August 2021.  The Academy, jointly operated by the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office and the Niagara Falls Police Department, was previously located at SUNY Niagara from 1974 to 2011.  The academy trains newly hired officers or those hoping to be hired by police agencies throughout Western New York.  The Niagara County Corrections Academy is also held at SUNY Niagara.

Niagara County Legislature Chairman Becky Wydysh said, “The Niagara County Legislature is proud to support law enforcement across the county, and we are very excited that all the funding is now in place to move forward with the new law enforcement academy.  Having a state-of-the-art academy on the SUNY Niagara campus will provide the very best training for our future law enforcement officials while offering some unique learning opportunities to students in the SUNY Niagara criminal justice program.”

SUNY Niagara President William J. Murabito said having this new facility on the SUNY Niagara campus brings the program into the 21st century.  “The new learning environment will translate directly to more opportunities for NCLEA and SUNY Niagara criminal justice students and their ability to remain competitive.  The students will be better-trained and more prepared because they will be more comfortable with the technology,” Murabito said.

Niagara County Sheriff Michael Filicetti said, “I want to thank SUNY Niagara and the County Legislature for being partners with the Sheriff’s Office in our vision for a new law enforcement academy.  The training requirements for those going into law enforcement are extensive and continue to evolve.  Our new Academy will allow us to use state-of-the-art technology to meet these training needs and better prepare future law enforcement officers for their careers.”

Plans for the new 15,000 square-foot building call for four classrooms with movable walls, men’s and women’s locker rooms, a reality-based training room, and the use of force simulator.  It is anticipated that construction will start in the spring 2023, and the facility will open in 2024.

SUNY Niagara students presenting their projects

SUNY Niagara welcomes the public to a Student Showcase on Thursday, April 21 in conjunction with the College’s Spring Open House.

SUNY Niagara will host a Student Showcase on Thursday, April 21 from 5:00-7:30 p.m.  This event gives students of the College an opportunity to display and explain a project connected to a classroom experience under the guidance of a faculty mentor.  Students present their work as either a poster project, table project, art exhibition, or performance.

This year the Student Showcase features projects in welding technology, animal training, curing meat, alternative birthing methods, the history of warships, and many more.  Cash prizes are given to the winning entries, with a grand prize of $1000.  Funds for the prizes are raised through donations made by faculty and staff, and winning projects are determined by a panel of judges comprised of SUNY Niagara staff members and emeritus faculty.  Judges review each project using a rubric assessing project appearance, content quality and presentation style.  “What I enjoy most is seeing the extremely high quality of the student’s work and their universal enthusiasm showing it off,” says Dr. Matthew Clarcq, History Professor and Coordinator of the Student Showcase.

The event will be held on the second floor of the Learning Commons during SUNY Niagara’s Spring Open House, and attendees will have an opportunity to vote for the People’s Choice Award, with a prize of $250.  For more information on the Student Showcase, visit https://www.niagaracc.suny.edu/showcase/

The Niagara Falls Culinary Institute (NFCI) will host the American Culinary Federation (ACF) Monte Dolce Spring Classic Competition on Saturday, April 23 – Sunday, April 24 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day.  While most competitors are from NFCI, there are also participants from California, the Patterson Club in Connecticut, the Duquesne Club in Pittsburgh, and one competitor from Guatemala.

The faculty at NFCI are eager to host the event after it has been postponed for 2 years due to COVID.  “The professionalism and talent that surrounds this event is so very inspiring,” says Chef Scott Steiner, Coordinator of Culinary Arts at NFCI.   Saturday features cold platter displays, specialty cakes, pastry tables and bread displays, and live ice carving on Old Falls Street in front of NFCI.  Sunday will consist of live contemporary cooking for student and professional chefs and pastry chefs.  Competitors will have a 1-hour time slot with a 10 minute window for plating to create and exhibit their best live-action skills as they are being closely watched by ACF-certified judges.

The competition has been named after Monte Dolce, who was a chef, educator, adjunct instructor at NFCI, and founding member of the ACF of Greater Buffalo.  Following his death from cancer in 2021, the ACF of Greater Buffalo wanted to honor Chef Dolce for the dedication he showed to the organization since 1968.  “Chef Monte was a very close friend of mine, and I want to keep his legacy alive,” says Steiner.

The competition coincides with the Spring Open House at the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute on Saturday, April 23, allowing the public to an opportunity to view the state-of-the-art culinary labs in action, as well as explore college programs and career opportunities.  Both events are free to attend, and more information can be found at https://www.niagaracc.suny.edu/nfci/
