Admissions Placement Testing

Placement Testing

Your academic records will be reviewed to determine if testing is needed; many students will be placed in appropriate coursework based on high school or transfer records.

  • If you are required to take one or more placement tests, you will be notified by the Admissions Office.
    • You may have a waiver based upon your past educational history, please ensure all transcripts for high school, College, AP, and CLEP have been sent to Admissions.
  • Test results will determine placement in appropriate reading, writing, and/or math course(s).
  • Directions on how to prepare for the test and how to take the test(s) at home can be found on this webpage in the “Accepted Student At-Home Test Directions” section.
    • Preparation before taking the test is strongly encouraged.
  • All tests are untimed and can be taken at-home, if you do not have access to a computer, you can utilize computers at NCCC or your local library.
  • Students are allowed to take each placement test twice prior to the start of your first semester.  Test scores are valid for up to 3 years.

Score Placement & Waiver Criteria

The following charts outline criteria to determine if you are placed in courses without further testing:

Academic Adjustments for Students with Disabilities

Placement tests are untimed. This means an academic adjustment for extended time is not necessary. Students who need other academic adjustments for the placement tests should contact Accessibility Services prior to taking any tests.

Accepted Student At-Home Test Directions

Accepted students for whom placement testing is required or recommended can complete their math, reading, and/or writing tests from the comfort of their home. Students simply need their NCCC TWolves login information and the directions below to complete their tests.

(Note: use Chrome or Firefox as your browser.)

High Demand Program Applicants

Applicants to high demand programs (ex: Animal Management, Nursing, or Allied Health) for whom placement testing is required would have been e-mail instructions on how to complete their placement tests as they do not have an NCCC TWolves login until acceptance. If you would like your test instructions re-sent to you or have questions, please contact the Testing Center.

English as a Second Language

ESL students who do not pass the NCCC Reading and/or Writing placements tests on their first attempt may request to take Accuplacer ESL tests instead of retaking the NCCC online tests. ESL Accuplacer tests must be taken on campus. Please contact the Testing Center to schedule an appointment. Remember to bring a picture ID on the day of your testing.
