Explore. Discover. Grow. Inspire.

Three Pathways to Honors Credit

Honors Credit may be obtained through a combination of designated honors classes, honors contract, and independent study opportunities.

Honors courses will fulfill the following Student Learning Outcomes:

  • Complete advanced work including appropriate use of various resources and primary texts.
  • Demonstrate how the course has enhanced their citizenship and expanded involvement in the community.
  • Make connections between the course material and other academic disciplines to enhance future learning.
  • Place the course material in its local and global cultural context.
  • Utilize the course experience to enhance communication and leadership.

Honors Courses

Each semester the Honors Institute will offer three to six designated honors courses.  Honors Institute students will register for these courses during advisement.

Honors Contract

Any Honor Institute student may receive Honors credit for any course other than an entry-level course (for example, English 101).   An Honors contract is an enhancement of a regular course arranged between an Honors student and that course’s instructor.

Procedure

  1. The student registers for the course in the normal way, without any need for Honors authorization.
  2. The student and instructor agree on a project and submit their plans to the Honors Coordinator for approval.
  3. Once completed, a notation is entered on the student’s transcript that Honors credit has been awarded for the course.
  4. Blank Honors Contract forms are available on this website, Blackboard or from the Honors Coordinator, E-227.

Independent Study

An Honors Independent Study is available to Honors students after they have completed 24 credit hours towards their program and have taken at least one Honors Colloquium.

Procedure

  1. The student and instructor agree on a project and submit their plans to the Honors Coordinator for approval.
  2. Once completed, a notation is entered on the student’s transcript that Honors credit has been awarded for the course.

No more than 50% of Honors credits may be earned through an
Honors Contract and/or Independent Study
