This 31 credit hour certificate program has been designed to prepare students with a strong foundation in early childhood values and knowledge. Early childhood workers with a certificate are more likely to remain in the field, which is essential to providing a secure learning environment for young children. Their understanding of children’s behavior and family dynamics allows them to interact in ways that are more supportive of children and families.

The certificate in Early Childhood Studies is structured to provide a solid understanding of child development and how children learn in the context of diverse families and communities through course assignments and observations in the field. Coursework provides a balance of skills in writing, communication, and mathematics. In completing this certificate, students fulfill the state requirement for Child Abuse Identification and Reporting, Safe Schools Against Violence in Education (SAVE).

Program Goals and Objectives
  • Build family and community relationships.
  • Promote child development and learning.
  • To prepare graduates to be effective early childhood-care providers.

Alumni Spotlight

Jill Coleman ’11

“I liked that the Early Childhood Studies, Certificate program wasn’t much more work on top of what you would originally need to complete the associate’s degree. Having the opportunity to advance quickly in the Early Childhood field with only an extra course or two was convenient. If you are interested in the program, my advice is to go for it! After graduating from SUNY Niagara, I went on to complete my Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Administration from Empire State College. In September 2016, I opened Jill’s Play Yard, a Child Care Center on West Lake Road in Wilson. We are the only Child Care Center and full day Preschool in this area.”
