Dolce Valvo Art Center at SUNY Niagara Presents ‘THERE’ Exhibition

Sanborn, N.Y. – SUNY Niagara announces the opening of “THERE,” an exhibition featuring 12 artists who explore landscape as a subject. “THERE” will be on display in the Dolce Valvo Art Center at the college’s campus in Sanborn from Sept. 10 to Oct.10.

The exhibition presents a wide range of landscape paintings, drawings and prints by 11 artists from western New York and one from New York City. Three of the featured artists are alumni of SUNY Niagara. The exhibition consists of 50 works, many of which were created en plein air (outdoors).

“We are extremely proud of our ‘THERE’ exhibition,” said Dolce Valvo Art Center Director James Goodrich. “This exhibition showcases some of our region’s most talented artists and offers a diverse and thought-provoking exploration of nature and its beauty.”

SUNY Niagara Announces Fall Keynote Speaker

The SUNY Niagara Faculty Resource Center for Academic Excellence (FRCAE) is pleased to announce that the Fall 2021 Keynote Speaker is Professor Nancy Knechtel. This award-winning faculty member is a professor of Art History and Honors colloquiums in the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences division at the College. Using decades of research and experience, Professor Knechtel will present, Artists’ Homes and Studios: Inspiring Spaces. This address will showcase intimate details about the homes of world-famous artists such as Rembrandt, Monet, and Georgia O’Keeffe. Her presentation will take place on October 26 at 2:30 p.m. at the Sanborn Campus, room E-142.

A reception will follow Professor Knechtel’s presentation of Artists’ Homes and Studios in the FRCAE department, room D-104. The event is free to the public. Parking can be found in Lot 1 or Lot 2. SUNY Niagara accepting entries for 21st annual film festival

SUNY Niagara will host its 21st Annual Film and Animation Festival on Saturday, May 9, 2020, in the Arts and Media Theatre on the college’s Sanborn campus.  The event brings together filmmakers and animation artists from Western New York and beyond the region as well.

The highlight of the event is an international film competition in which awards are given to filmmakers in a variety of categories.  A $200 prize is awarded to the best films in the following categories: Drama, Comedy, Animation, Documentary, Music Video, Horror, and Experimental.  Judges for the contest include filmmakers, animators, actors, musicians, and other industry professionals.  Three additional $100 prizes are awarded to local filmmakers in the “Best of 716” category: Best High School Student Film, Best College Student Film and Best of the Festival.

The event is sponsored by SUNY Niagara’s Digital Media Department, Animation Department, Communication Studies Department, along with the Digital Filmmakers Club and the SUNY Niagara’s Office of Student Life.  Admission to the festival is free, with food and refreshments available for purchase at the event.

Finding Refuge in Buffalo

SUNY Niagara exhibition explores refugee experience in Buffalo

The Dolce Valvo Art Center at SUNY Niagara is pleased to host the exhibition, Finding Refuge in Buffalo, a celebration of Buffalo’s history as an immigration and refugee hub. The exhibition is a photo and essay collection by the University at Buffalo’s Director of Journalism, Jody K. Biehl, and internationally recognized photographer Brendan Bannon that touches on questions of home, belonging, culture, and what it means to be American.

The public is invited to join in a conversation with curator Jody K. Biehl and Rwandan refugee Rubens Mukunzi on Thursday, February 13, 2020, from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. exploring the experiences of those seeking refuge in Buffalo. The project features 24 portraits and profiles of people from 13 different countries and stories that span multiple generations. From Italian, Polish and Irish immigrants in the 1900s to Burmese, Bhutanese, and Congolese today, the exhibit looks at how immigration continues to reshape our city.

John R. Oishei Child Development Center

Community invited to Read, Imagine, Draw at SUNY Niagara

On Wednesday, January 29, 2020, members of the community are invited to attend a book house dedication event entitled, “Read, Imagine, Draw” at the Dolce Valvo Art Center at SUNY Niagara from 5-7:00 p.m.  As part of the event, free books from preschool level to adult will be available for attendees.  The event will also feature a reading of Where the Wild Things Are, a book by Maurice Sendak, and a craft station with activities that coincide with the story.  Artwork created by the students of the John R. Oishei Child Development Center will be on display in the Dolce Valvo Art Center from Monday, January 27 through Friday, January 31.

Participants in the Liberty Partnerships Future Leaders program at SUNY Niagara built the book house that will be donated to the John R. Oishei Child Development Center as part of the event.  The book house will allow the community to share and take out books free of charge and will be a permanent fixture on campus.

Dennis Bertram art show at SUNY Niagara’s Dolce Valvo Art Center

As part of a continuing visiting artist series aiming to bring local and regional artists to Niagara County, Dennis Bertram of the Buffalo Arts Studio will be having a solo show in the Dolce Valvo Art Center within the Learning Commons at SUNY Niagara.  The show titled, Complicated begins on Monday, October 21, with an opening reception on Friday, October 25 from 5:00-8:00 p.m.  The event is free and open to the public and provides an opportunity for Niagara County residents and students at SUNY Niagara to see this artwork without having to travel to Buffalo.

Dennis Bertram is a Buffalo-based artist who began to pursue art seriously in the late 1990s and full time after retiring from an academic career at the University at Buffalo School of Public Health and Health Professions. His oil paintings are composed of diverse and imaginative forms that reflect his interest in the concept of complexity. He has published a book about his art, “Complicated: A Plain Talking Artist’s Guide to His Art.”

Dennis’ art training includes studio courses at Buffalo State College and workshops at the Steve Carpenter Art Center in Rochester, NY. He maintains a studio at Buffalo Arts Studio and exhibits with the Buffalo Society of Artists, Buffalo Niagara Art Association, Hallwalls, and the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County, Florida.

In New York, Dennis has had solo exhibitions at the Carnegie Art Center, Empire State College, Olean Public Library Gallery, Jamestown’s Prendergast Library, Bausch & Lomb Corporate Headquarters in Rochester, and at the Community School of Music and Arts in Ithaca. He has also had solo exhibitions at the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County in Lake Worth, Florida, the 621 Gallery in Tallahassee, Florida, University of Wisconsin Madison, University of Minnesota Morris, and Cabrini College in Radnor, Pennsylvania. His paintings have been exhibited at many galleries across the United States.
