Three SUNY Niagara Students Recognized for Outstanding Achievements

SUNY Niagara students Alexander Minnehan, Meredith Preve and Regan Lytle recently earned awards for their unique contributions in the areas of academics, civic leadership, and athletics. The awardees were recognized by local and state leadership including: SUNY Niagara President William J. Murabito, Senator Rob Ortt, and State University of New York (SUNY) Chancellor John B. King, Jr.

Sophomores Alexander Minnehan, a Biology and Chemistry major from Lakeville, NY, and Meredith Preve, an Environmental Studies major from Tonawanda, NY, earned the 2023 Chancellor’s Awards for Student Excellence (CASE), the highest honor bestowed upon a student by SUNY. Presented by the SUNY Chancellor in Albany, John B. King said, “The SUNY family is incredibly proud of your accomplishments, your commitment to realizing your ambitions, and, most of all, of the person you are.”

Alexander Minnehan will graduate with two Associate degrees. In addition to earning the Chancellor’s Award, he was presented the President’s Cup at SUNY Niagara’s Thunderwolves Awards Night on May 3. This is the most distinguished award in SUNY Niagara intercollegiate

sports and recognizes both athletic and academic achievements. Alexander not only maintains a 3.7 GPA, he also leads an active campus life and has earned several prestigious baseball honors. He was proud to represent SUNY Niagara as a coach at the Livingston County Baseball Camp and serve as a tutor on campus. Alexander’s professors and coaches write that he is a “Remarkable, dedicated, intelligent student who has excelled in class and on the field while being a positive role model to his teammates and classmates.”

In addition to the Chancellor’s Award, Meredith Preve also earned the SUNY Niagara President’s Medallion. This recognition is given to graduating students who played a vital role in the development of co-curricular activities. Meredith’s passion and determination in reviving the SUNY Niagara Outdoor Activities Club through cultivating members and planning Earth Week activities is what led her to this prestigious award. Meredith is also responsible for working with college administrators to bring a composting program to the SUNY Niagara Dining Commons which will continue beyond her time as a student. She will deliver the student address at the 59th Annual SUNY Niagara Commencement ceremony.

Regan Lytle, a Business Administration student, is also the recipient of two prestigious awards: SUNY Niagara’s President’s Medallion and the All-New York Academic Award, given by the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. She oversees clubs and organizations on campus as vice president of SUNY Niagara’s Student Government Association. Additionally, she is vice president of the college’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter, president of the National Society of Leadership and Success, and an Alpha Beta Gamma member. She has worked with Habitat for Humanity and raised money for animal shelters and organizations that fight against human sex trafficking.

The trio will graduate from SUNY Niagara on May 13 with honors.

Former SUNY Niagara Trustee Joan Wolfgang Receives State Award Posthumously

Joan W. Wolfgang, former SUNY Niagara Board of Trustee Chairperson, was honored this past weekend as the posthumous recipient of the Donald M. Mawhinney, Jr. Trustee Leadership Award at the annual meeting of the New York Community College Trustees (NTCCT), held in Saratoga Springs.  Wolfgang was appointed to the SUNY Niagara Board of Trustees by the Niagara County Legislature in 1982.   She served as the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees for three different terms during her tenure, which lasted twenty-six years.   She was the second-longest serving member of the SUNY Niagara Board of Trustees.   While serving on the SUNY Niagara Board of Trustees, Wolfgang was instrumental in bringing to fruition many of the college’s higher-profile projects, including state-of-the-art campus housing on the Sanborn campus.  Joan Wolfgang passed away in 2010, leaving a legacy of the lasting impact of service and leadership on her community and SUNY Niagara.

The Donald M. Mawhinney, Jr. Trustee Leadership Award is presented to a trustee who demonstrates a significant commitment to the community college mission through exceptional leadership, inspired vision, and outstanding professional contributions to support their local institution.

SUNY Niagara Alumni Seeking Nominations for Annual Award

The SUNY Niagara Alumni Association is seeking nominations for its Distinguished Alumni Award. This award is bestowed to deserving alumni who exemplify educational achievements, career success, community involvement, and support to SUNY Niagara. The award will be presented at the SUNY Niagara Foundation, Inc. Scholarship Gala to be held on October 17, 2020, at the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute.

The nominated individual must have completed 50 or more credit hours at SUNY Niagara, yet it is strongly recommended that she/he is a graduate. Nomination applications are available to submit online or download and mail in at http://niagaracc.suny.edu/alumni/awards/. Please mail applications to the following address, SUNY Niagara Alumni Association, 3111 Saunders Settlement Rd., Sanborn, NY 14132.
