Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) Original and Refresher

This course presents the National EMS Education Standards for the AEMT and is targeted towards two distinct EMS providers:

  • Current NYS DOH EMTs who wish to acquire new and/or additional advanced life support skills. ALS skills include intravenous (IV) therapy; advanced airway management, emergent medications, routes of administration, and advanced patient assessment techniques. An American Heart Association Basic Life Support CPR certification is also included in this course. All candidates must possess an NYS DOH (Basic) EMT card that has not or will not expire by the NYS DOH state certification exam at the end of the course. In addition to the required classroom hours, the student must complete a required clinical experience in a hospital setting and an internship with an ALS ambulance.
  • Current NYS DOH AEMT-Intermediates who wish to go through the transition process to the new AEMT National Education Standards and certify as an AEMT. There is a challenge/evaluation exam offered to allow classroom credit for previous AEMT-Intermediate knowledge. All candidates for the challenge/evaluation exam must have a current NYS DOH AMT-Intermediate certificate that does not expire before the state certification exam. If the student’s certificate has or will expire, or if the student does not take the challenge/evaluation exam, they will be required to attend all sessions. Due to the transition to the new standards, there will be several mandatory sessions. No more NYS DOH AEMT-Intermediate refresher courses will be offered.
