Cultivating Diversity in the Classroom and the Workplace

The SUNY Niagara Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee was created in September 2016. It serves as an initiative to actively engage the whole college community in recognizing the importance of diversity for assuring the success of all members of our college community, including students, staff, faculty, and administration, in an ever-increasingly global environment.

Arab American Heritage Month

The world, and certainly the SUNY Niagara community, watches as forces in the Middle East struggle to resolve a long standing conflict. As always, education has a role to play in assisting everyone in understanding the situation and how we can aspire to help in whatever small way we can. Please take the time to educate yourself during April, recognized by President Joseph R. Biden as Arab American Heritage Month! Freddy O. Arzuaga ’23

Freddy O. Arzuaga graduated from Buffalo Alternative HS, and is currently enrolled in SUNY Niagara. He is majoring in Liberal Arts and Sciences. He is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and also a active member of The Men of Merit (which is sponsored by the Buffalo Prenatal Perinatal Network on behalf of the Buffalo Fatherhood Initiative https://bppn.org/programs/buffalo-fatherhood-initiative/). Freddy was quoted as saying, “In 2018 I decided I had enough of the streets and I wanted to seek recovery…through my recovery I met my roommate Jacob (Flemming), he was really really cool… he was already attending SUNY Niagara and he kept insisting that I fill out the application for it (which I did). SUNY Niagara has impacted my life greatly! (I am now) a person that’s highly motivated and wants more of this! I’ve been on the Dean’s list three times… and received (multiple) awards. I am going to transfer to Buffalo State University to pursue Social Work and a minor in Psychology. With this I want to show my kids that anything’s possible.”

John D Strong
Chief Diversity and Equity Officer

John D Strong received his undergraduate degree from Canisius College in Physical Education and his Master’s Degree in Education from Walden University with a concentration in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment. He currently Chairs the SUNY Niagara Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) Committee and has been a part of it since its inception in 2016. He is also the current Chair of the Society of Health And Physical Education America’s Special Interest Group on Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion which has since become a standing Committee of that national organization. John’s persistence in the area of JEDI has been reflected in other similar roles at the state and local levels for almost ten years and he is proud to serve at SUNY Niagara as our newest Chief Diversity and Equity Officer.
