SUNY Niagara Announces Fall 2022 Dean’s List

A total of 598 students were recently recognized for their outstanding academic achievements for the fall 2022 semester at SUNY Niagara.  Both full-time and part-time students were honored for their scholastic successes by being named to either the Dean’s List or the Part-Time Honors list. In addition, students who earned a GPA of 4.0 were recognized through the President’s List.  This fall, 118 students met the high standard.

To be named to the College’s Dean’s List, a student must be enrolled full-time with 12 or more credit hours and have achieved a semester grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 or better. To be eligible for the Part-Time Honors list, a student must be enrolled in six to 11 hours of course work and have a semester GPA of 3.5 or better.

Honorees represent many cities across Western New York including: Akron, Alden, Amherst, Appleton, Barker, Buffalo, Burt, Cheektowaga, Clarence, Depew, East Amherst, Eden, Gasport, Grand Island, Hamburg, Kenmore, Lackawanna, Lakeview, Lancaster, Lewiston, Lockport, Lyndonville, Marilla, Medina, Middleport, Newfane, North Tonawanda, Niagara Falls, Olean, Orchard Park, Ransomville, Rochester,  Sanborn, Tonawanda, Warsaw, Williamsville, Wilson, and Youngstown. Filmmaker to Screen Documentary at SUNY Niagara

Independent filmmaker, John D. Scott, will screen his 2021 documentary, Elizabeth Bishop and The Art of Losing on Wednesday, February 8 at 2 p.m. in the SUNY Niagara Arts and Media Theatre, 3111 Saunders Settlement Rd., Sanborn. The event is a part of the College’s year-long 60th celebration.  The public is welcome to attend. Admission is free and refreshments will be served.

This compelling film explores the creative process of one of America’s greatest twentieth-century poets, Elizabeth Bishop. Scott structures the montage of animation, re-enactments of key moments in Bishop’s life, as well as audio recordings and film footage to suggest that a series of losses prepared her to write one of her most famous pieces, “One Art.”

SUNY Niagara professor and program coordinator, Dr. Ian Stapley, shares “This film gives the viewer one clear glimpse into the demanding creative process that leads to the making of poetry.” Jean Linn, Chair of the Henrietta G. Lewis Library adds that this special feature “Shows SUNY Niagara’s commitment to the arts and the community.”

SUNY Niagara Nursing Licensures Exceed State and National Rates

SUNY Niagara Nursing programs announced today that their students’ National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) scores are well above the state and national averages. The 2022 Registered Nursing program NCLEX scores are 92.5% and the Licensed Practical Nursing program scores are 100% for the third year in a row.

SUNY Niagara President William J. Murabito said, “These exceptional rates reflect the dedication and diligence of both our nursing faculty and students. As one of the most rigorous nursing programs in Western New York, our graduates are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to effectively treat patients throughout the healthcare industry.”

Dr. Diane Pytlik-Flammia, assistant vice president of academic affairs for the SUNY Niagara Nursing, Physical & Allied Health programs, shares, “We are proud of our graduates and confident in their knowledge to care for our community. The faculty and I share in the students’ achievement of these high NCLEX scores as they have moved through the pandemic and unforeseen times in education with perseverance. Much credit should also go to our dedicated faculty who ensure students are given the highest quality content in theory, lab, and the clinical setting.”

The success rate was released on the heels of SUNY’s announcement that more than $1.4 million has been allocated to 11 campuses in an effort to expand nursing degree programs. SUNY Niagara was a proud recipient of the grant made possible by SUNY’s Nursing Emergency Training Fund.

SUNY Niagara is one of 30 community colleges in the State University of New York, the largest public university system in the country. The College provides more than 50 certificate and degree programs and is funded by the Niagara County Legislature, the State University of New York, and student tuition.

Earn 3 Credits in 12 Days at SUNY Niagara Winter Session

SUNY Niagara offers a variety of opportunities for students to earn college credits at a reasonable price, and winter session allows students to expedite their educational experience by taking an entire class in less than 2 weeks.  SUNY Niagara’s winter session runs from Tuesday, January 3, 2022 through Saturday, January 14, 2023 allowing students to earn 3 credits in just 12 days.

The major benefit of studying at SUNY Niagara is that classes are more affordable than nearly all other Western New York colleges, and credits can transfer easily to other institutions.  While students do have other options for winter classes, SUNY Niagara has both in-person and online courses offered at one of the lowest tuition rates in the region.

Seats are still available in nearly 30 general education and pre-requisite courses required for meeting program and degree requirements.  During the abbreviated intersession, students can receive credits in classes such as Music Appreciation, Spanish, Introduction to Sociology, Business, and more.

The inaugural SUNY Cannabis Conference will take place on January 10, 2023 at SUNY Niagara, 3111 Saunders Settlement Road, Sanborn, NY. In conjunction with the State University of New York (SUNY), Genesee Community College, Jamestown Community College, and SUNY Erie, SUNY Niagara will facilitate a unique conference which covers an array of topics from the “Seed to Sale” lifespan in the cannabis business.

Whether you are new to the legal cannabis industry, an educator, member of the public, or an experienced industry veteran looking to grow your business, the inaugural 2023 SUNY Cannabis Conference is one you won’t want to miss! The keynote address will be presented by Dr. Laszlo Mechtler, Medical Director of the Dent Neurologic Institute. Dr. Mechtler has published some of the first major retrospective research trials on Medical Marijuana in Headaches and other neurologic disorders. He lectures both nationally and internationally and is recognized as a leader in the fields of Neuroimaging, Headache Medicine, NeuroOncology, and Medical Cannabis.

SUNY Niagara EMS Program to Offer State of the Art Training

Instructors and students participate in the SUNY Niagara Workforce EMS program using the state of the art, AmbuMan Advanced training manikin.

Through a $125,000 State University of New York (SUNY) grant funding award, the SUNY Niagara Emergency Medical Services (EMS) program is now able to provide instruction on an all-new, state-of-the-art AmbuMan Advanced training manikin as part of Advanced Life Support course.  This program innovation was made possible through the SUNY High Needs Localities Fund which will enable students to hone life-saving abilities and also for a full simulation of Automated External Defibrillator (AED) electrode placement.  “Having this state-of-the-art training manikin will allow us as instructors to take EMS education to the next level by making sure students can have practice on a skill that they may not otherwise be able to accomplish on a live patient.” said Rodney Hogg, Program Instructor.

The unit has already been put to use in training area first responders by SUNY Niagara Office of Workforce Development as a representative from the manufacturer Ambu Inc., David Henry, and a representative from Bound Tree Medical, Dawn Matteo conducted an in-service session for program students this past month. “SUNY Niagara Workforce Development is proud to bring cutting-edge instructional technology to the community in providing potentially life-saving instruction to our first responders.” said Brian R. Michel, Assistant Vice President of Economic Development. Numerous trainings are scheduled to commence throughout the year. Life-Sized Gingerbread Wonderland Returns to NFCI

Gingerbread Wonderland will return to the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute (NFCI) from November 26 through December 18. Events will run Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sundays from 12 to 4 p.m. The public is welcome to check out the colorful, giant gingerbread masterpiece, constructed by the talented students and chefs of the Baking and Pastry Arts program.

As if a giant cookie village wasn’t sweet enough, NFCI’s Gingerbread Wonderland also offers a variety of holiday themed activities for the whole family to enjoy. Visitors can experience live music, face painting, cookie decorating, crafts, children’s story times, and even visits with Santa Claus himself! Admission is free and festive activity sets are available to purchase for $10. Each set includes two delicious cookies with supplies to decorate them, two crafts, two coloring sheets with crayons, and two letters to Santa.

The annual gingerbread competition will also return to this year’s schedule of events. All are welcome to enter as we offer professional, amateur, high school, college, and children’s categories. Entry forms are due by November 28 and all physical entries must be brought to NFCI, located at 28 Old Falls Street, Niagara Falls, on Thursday, December 1 between 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

In addition to the holiday fun inside NFCI, Jingle Falls USA will also provide activities on Old Falls Street outside of the building on Saturdays from November 26 through December 10. Tylec Appointed to SUNY Niagara Board of Trustees

Gail Tylec, of North Tonawanda, newly appointed member of the SUNY Niagara Board of Trustees.

Governor Kathy Hochul has appointed former Dietetic Studies professor Gail Tylec of North Tonawanda to fill a vacancy on the SUNY Niagara Board of Trustees.  Tylec recently retired from SUNY Niagara after having been an employee for over 30 years.  While at the College, she served as a senior faculty member, coordinator of physical education studies, Chair of the Science, Health, and Mathematics Division, and the Acting Vice President for Academic Affairs.   In recognition of Tylec’s many contributions to SUNY Niagara, she received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service.  She was also honored as a Distinguished Alumni of the College.

Tylec’s term will start immediately and expire on June 30, 2025.

SUNY Niagara Professor Named President of National Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting Board

Gemma Fournier, SUNY Niagara Surgical Technology Coordinator and Professor.

Gemma Fournier, Surgical Technology Program Coordinator and Professor at SUNY Niagara, was recently named the President of the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).

The NBSTSA is the certifying agency for surgical technologists in the United Stated. This organization is responsible for all decisions regarding certification– from determining eligibility to maintaining, denying, granting and renewing the designation. Ms. Fournier was first appointed to the NBSTSA in 2018.

Beginning her career as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) in 1989 at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, Ms. Fournier went on to begin her teaching career at SUNY Niagara in 1995. She has been a member of the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST) for the past 29 years and is a New York State Registered Nurse and a member of the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN). At the State level, she served on the Association of Surgical Technologists New York Assembly Board (NYAST) as President, Vice-President, Secretary, Director and delegate for 10 years.

Ms. Fournier earned her Associate in Applied Sciences/Surgical Technology degree from SUNY Niagara, Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from Niagara University, and her Masters in Nursing from University of Phoenix. In May 2012, she received the Fellows of the Association of Surgical Technologists (FAST) Award, followed by the Association of Surgical Technologists Didactic Educators Award and State of New York (SUNY) Chancellors Excellence in Teaching Award in 2013.

SUNY Niagara’s Surgical Technology program is a two-year program which offers specialized Surgical Technology lectures, well-rounded general education courses, and hands-on experience at clinical sites such as the Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, Catholic Health System, Kaleida Health System, and ECMC. SUNY Niagara graduates are employed throughout Buffalo/Niagara area hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers. The class of 2022 achieved 86% job placement upon completion of SUNY Niagara’s Surgical Technology AAS degree.

Ms. Fournier earned her Associate in Applied Sciences/Surgical Technology degree from SUNY Niagara, Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from Niagara University, and her Masters in Nursing from University of Phoenix. In May 2012, she received the Fellows of the Association of Surgical Technologists (FAST) Award, followed by the Association of Surgical Technologists Didactic Educators Award and State of New York (SUNY) Chancellors Excellence in Teaching Award in 2013.

SUNY Niagara’s Surgical Technology program is a two-year program which offers specialized Surgical Technology lectures, well-rounded general education courses, and hands-on experience at clinical sites such as the Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, Catholic Health System, Kaleida Health System, and ECMC. SUNY Niagara graduates are employed throughout Buffalo/Niagara area hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers. The class of 2022 achieved 86% job placement upon completion of SUNY Niagara’s Surgical Technology AAS degree.

SUNY Niagara Workforce Development Presents Community Academy Classes

SUNY Niagara Office of Workforce Development will present a community education speaker series beginning on November 9.  The classes take place on the SUNY Niagara Sanborn campus, the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute, and there is even a remote option.  All presentations are $10 per ticket, and tickets are available for purchase online: www.niagaracc.suny.edu/wd/community-academy/ or by calling Maryjo Erway at 716-614-6472.  Group pricing is available.

Learn from Chef Emily Lonigan how to maximize flavor and nutrients while reducing the time you spend washing dishes.  Eating Healthy: Sheet Pan Meals for your Family; a cooking demonstration at the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute will take place on November 9 from 6 pm – 8 pm.

If you are feeling mentally or physically depleted, take advantage of the lifestyle habits shared by pharmacist Dr. Kalpesh Desai in the virtual class “Good Lifestyle Habits to Improve your Overall Health.”   He will discuss ways to keep your mind active to decrease dementia, improve your diet and sleep routine, reduce depression and anxiety, and quit smoking.  This class takes place on November 16, 2022, from 6 – 8 pm.

On Wednesday, November 30, 2022, a class titled “Cryptocurrency and Its Impact on Industry” will be offered at the SUNY Niagara Sanborn campus.  You can learn from an expert what cryptocurrency is and how it operates within the modern industry.  The presenter has built and operated an industrial-scale bitcoin mining facility and intimately understands how it touches everyday life.  Also, learn the basics of investing.

SUNY Niagara Professor of World Languages Bridget Beilein presents her best travel hacks and tips from must-know travel basics to navigate ethnic cuisine and language, and even jetlag!  Her class, “Basic Travel Hacks and Tips on How to Use Social Media to Help Plan your Next Trip will be offered on Wednesday, December 7, from 6 pm – 8 pm on the SUNY Niagara Sanborn campus.  She will share how to turn a trip into a joyous adventure and experience!

Tara Hahn, NYS Delegate of the American Beekeeping Federation and owner of Hahn’s Honeybee Haven, will present fun facts about bees, hive management, honey benefits, and how we can help save the bees in her class titled “Bee Facts and Fun: My Experience in Beekeeping and DIY Bee Projects.”   This class takes place on the SUNY Niagara Sanborn campus on Wednesday, December 14, 2022, from 6 – 8 pm.
