NCCC Professor Named President of National Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting Board

Gemma Fournier, Surgical Technology Program Coordinator and Professor at Niagara County Community College (NCCC), was recently named the President of the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).

The NBSTSA is the certifying agency for surgical technologists in the United Stated. This organization is responsible for all decisions regarding certification– from determining eligibility to maintaining, denying, granting and renewing the designation. Ms. Fournier was first appointed to the NBSTSA in 2018.

Beginning her career as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) in 1989 at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, Ms. Fournier went on to begin her teaching career at NCCC in 1995. She has been a member of the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST) for the past 29 years and is a New York State Registered Nurse and a member of the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN). At the State level, she served on the Association of Surgical Technologists New York Assembly Board (NYAST) as President, Vice-President, Secretary, Director and delegate for 10 years.

Ms. Fournier earned her Associate in Applied Sciences/Surgical Technology degree from NCCC, Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from Niagara University, and her Masters in Nursing from University of Phoenix. In May 2012, she received the Fellows of the Association of Surgical Technologists (FAST) Award, followed by the Association of Surgical Technologists Didactic Educators Award and State of New York (SUNY) Chancellors Excellence in Teaching Award in 2013.

NCCC’s Surgical Technology program is a two-year program which offers specialized Surgical Technology lectures, well-rounded general education courses, and hands-on experience at clinical sites such as the Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, Catholic Health System, Kaleida Health System, and ECMC. NCCC graduates are employed throughout Buffalo/Niagara area hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers. The class of 2022 achieved 86% job placement upon completion of NCCC’s Surgical Technology AAS degree.

NCCC Workforce Development Presents Community Academy Classes

Niagara County Community College (NCCC) Office of Workforce Development will present a community education speaker series beginning on November 9.  The classes take place on the NCCC Sanborn campus, the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute, and there is even a remote option.  All presentations are $10 per ticket, and tickets are available for purchase online: www.niagaracc.suny.edu/wd/community-academy/ or by calling Maryjo Erway at 716-614-6472.  Group pricing is available.

Learn from Chef Emily Lonigan how to maximize flavor and nutrients while reducing the time you spend washing dishes.  Eating Healthy: Sheet Pan Meals for your Family; a cooking demonstration at the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute will take place on November 9 from 6 pm – 8 pm.

If you are feeling mentally or physically depleted, take advantage of the lifestyle habits shared by pharmacist Dr. Kalpesh Desai in the virtual class “Good Lifestyle Habits to Improve your Overall Health.”   He will discuss ways to keep your mind active to decrease dementia, improve your diet and sleep routine, reduce depression and anxiety, and quit smoking.  This class takes place on November 16, 2022, from 6 – 8 pm.

On Wednesday, November 30, 2022, a class titled “Cryptocurrency and Its Impact on Industry” will be offered at the NCCC Sanborn campus.  You can learn from an expert what cryptocurrency is and how it operates within the modern industry.  The presenter has built and operated an industrial-scale bitcoin mining facility and intimately understands how it touches everyday life.  Also, learn the basics of investing.

NCCC Professor of World Languages Bridget Beilein presents her best travel hacks and tips from must-know travel basics to navigate ethnic cuisine and language, and even jetlag!  Her class, “Basic Travel Hacks and Tips on How to Use Social Media to Help Plan your Next Trip will be offered on Wednesday, December 7, from 6 pm – 8 pm on the NCCC Sanborn campus.  She will share how to turn a trip into a joyous adventure and experience!

Tara Hahn, NYS Delegate of the American Beekeeping Federation and owner of Hahn’s Honeybee Haven, will present fun facts about bees, hive management, honey benefits, and how we can help save the bees in her class titled “Bee Facts and Fun: My Experience in Beekeeping and DIY Bee Projects.”   This class takes place on the NCCC Sanborn campus on Wednesday, December 14, 2022, from 6 – 8 pm.

Former NCCC Trustee Joan Wolfgang Receives State Award Posthumously

Joan W. Wolfgang, former Niagara County Community College (NCCC) Board of Trustee Chairperson, was honored this past weekend as the posthumous recipient of the Donald M. Mawhinney, Jr. Trustee Leadership Award at the annual meeting of the New York Community College Trustees (NTCCT), held in Saratoga Springs.  Wolfgang was appointed to the NCCC Board of Trustees by the Niagara County Legislature in 1982.   She served as the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees for three different terms during her tenure, which lasted twenty-six years.   She was the second-longest serving member of the NCCC Board of Trustees.   While serving on the NCCC Board of Trustees, Wolfgang was instrumental in bringing to fruition many of the college’s higher-profile projects, including state-of-the-art campus housing on the Sanborn campus.  Joan Wolfgang passed away in 2010, leaving a legacy of the lasting impact of service and leadership on her community and NCCC.

The Donald M. Mawhinney, Jr. Trustee Leadership Award is presented to a trustee who demonstrates a significant commitment to the community college mission through exceptional leadership, inspired vision, and outstanding professional contributions to support their local institution.

NCCC Foundation’s Scholarship Gala Offers One-of-a-Kind Auction

The NCCC Foundation Scholarship Gala will return to an in-person event on October 22 at the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute. To celebrate the College’s 60 Anniversary, this year’s fundraiser will be celebrated as a diamond anniversary themed gala. Organizers have planned a high-end auction full of unique items and priceless experiences to raise scholarship funds for students at Niagara County Community College (NCCC).

Top auction items include a signed Josh Allen Buffalo Bills football; dinner for ten at Chef’s Restaurant in the company of five Buffalo Sabres alumni; a Buffalo Bison’s suite with food and beverages; four tickets to a Buffalo Bills game; two tickets to a Toronto Raptors versus the Atlanta Hawks in Toronto; a Firth Jewelers’ 0.61 carat diamond; and even a unique dinner experience at Savor Restaurant’s chef’s table with big screen actor, William Fichtner. His success has led him to appear in many television series and blockbuster movies including: Prison Break, Mom, Armageddon, The Perfect Storm, Pearl Harbor, Black Hawk Down, The Longest Yard, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Independence Day: Resurgence.

Other auction items include private dinners and wine pairings at beloved restaurants such as Ilio DiPaolo’s, Hutch’s, Russell’s, and Webster’s Bistro. NCCC Foundation to Recognize Distinguished Student Scholars at Annual Scholarship Gala

Distinguished Student Scholarship recipients will be showcased at the Niagara County Community College (NCCC) Foundation Scholarship Diamond Gala on Saturday, October 22, 2022 at the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute. The 2022 Gala is unique as it is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the college, the first in-person Gala since 2019, and students from the last three years will be honored.

This award is the most prestigious scholarship offered by the NCCC Foundation to incoming Niagara County freshman. It provides two years of tuition-free education to deserving students. The individuals were selected based on their academic excellence, service to the community, and loyalty to Niagara County.

During the 2021-2022 academic year, almost $200,000 was awarded to nearly 200 deserving students. The deadline to apply for spring 2023 is Friday, October 21, 2022.

Amazon to Pay Tuition for its Employees Attending NCCC

Today, Niagara County Community College (NCCC) announced they had been selected as an education partner for Amazon’s Career Choice program, providing Amazon’s hourly employees the ability to pursue certificates and associate degrees in programs of their choosing at NCCC. The Amazon Career Choice program will provide an annual benefit covering tuition and select fees for all qualifying hourly employees accepted as students at NCCC.

“This partnership between Amazon and NCCC helps to remove one of the biggest barriers to continuing education—time and money,” said NCCC President William J. Murabito. “At NCCC, students can choose from over 50 high-quality programs and certificates. Our tuition is lower than many other area colleges, and several of our programs hold specialized accreditations. We offer flexible instructional methods to learn when it is convenient for you.”

Amazon’s Career Choice program is an education benefit that empowers employees to learn new skills for career success at Amazon or elsewhere. The program meets individual learners where they are on their education journey through various education and upskilling opportunities, including full college tuition, industry certifications designed to lead to in-demand jobs, and foundational skills such as English language proficiency and high school diplomas and GEDs. In the U.S., the company is investing $1.2 billion to upskill more than 300,000 employees by 2025 to help move them into higher-paying, in-demand jobs.

NCCC Named Top Performer for Recruitment of Students Pursuing Non-Traditional Degrees

For the first time in its history, Niagara County Community College (NCCC) was recognized as a top 10 performer among nearly 50 higher education institutions across New York State for retention and recruitment of students pursuing non-traditional fields of study.  NCCC was made aware of this honor by the Nontraditional Employment & Training (NET) Program for its excellence in supporting males pursuing degrees in Nursing and Allied Health programs.  The NET Program works in partnership with the New York State Education Department (NYSED) to promote its mission of ending occupational gender domination, which limits economic growth and development, maintains gender inequality, and curtails workforce opportunities.

NCCC is proud to support all its students in their academic efforts and will continue to recruit and encourage those who belong to underrepresented populations within their fields.  Brian R. Michel, NCCC Assistant Vice President of Academic Affairs, Economic Development, noted that this recognition reflects the successful partnership between NCCC and collaborative contributions by area industry.  “We would like to commend the hard work and effort put forth by Dr. Diane Pytlik-Flammia, NCCC Assistant Vice President, her team, and the NCCC Nursing and Allied Health students in achieving this accolade.”

NCCC Accepting Housing Applications; Waiving Administrative Fees

The Student Housing Village at Niagara County Community College is now accepting applications for the 2022-2023 school year. The $75 administrative fee is being waived for the month of August for new and returning residents. Our suites are going fast, so be sure to apply today at www.niagaracc.suny.edu/housing.

NCCC offers a unique residential experience for its students: single bedroom occupancy. These single rooms are attached to a shared living room, bathroom, and kitchen. The kitchen includes a refrigerator, stove, microwave, dishwasher and dining space. The suites can accommodate two to five residents.

NCCC’s Student Housing Village also includes 24/7 on-site security, a mailroom, vending machines, coin operated laundry, and several community rooms for events or group study sessions.

A $200 refundable security deposit ($206 if using PayPal) is still required.

NCCC Instructor to Speak on a Panel to Discuss Public Health and Education in Cannabis

NCCC Horticulture Instructor Melissa Moore will share industry expertise on a cannabis panel at UB on Thursday, July 28.

Niagara County Community College (NCCC) Horticulture Instructor Melissa Moore is lending her expertise to a panel discussion, “From Legacy to Legalization” at the University at Buffalo (UB) on Thursday, July 28.  This event features discussions and insights from industry professionals on the cannabis industry in New York State.

Moore, an instructor in cultivation at NCCC has a bachelor of arts in organismal biology and a master of science in sustainable engineering.  For nearly two decades she has participated in commercial agriculture of organic crops and cannabis inflorescence in Northern California.  In 2015, she formed Emerald Triangle Analytics, working in conjunction with Steep Hill Analytics in Berkeley, California to make testing more available for the public.  In 2020, she began teaching cannabis courses at NCCC, where she has developed 6 courses concentrating on cannabis cultivation and regulatory compliance.  This fall she will also teach a new course, Medical Applications of Cannabis.  NCCC offers flexible learning options where students can take courses both online and in-person.

At Thursday’s panel, Moore will cover the topic of public health of cannabis and education.    The event runs from 9:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in room 147 of Diefendorf Hall on the South Campus of UB, and will feature more than a dozen experts in the community.  There is no fee to attend this event, and it is open to the public.  For more information and to register, visit https://rb.gy/tputbf

Moore, an instructor in cultivation at NCCC has a bachelor of arts in organismal biology and a master of science in sustainable engineering.  For nearly two decades she has participated in commercial agriculture of organic crops and cannabis inflorescence in Northern California.  In 2015, she formed Emerald Triangle Analytics, working in conjunction with Steep Hill Analytics in Berkeley, California to make testing more available for the public.  In 2020, she began teaching cannabis courses at NCCC, where she has developed 6 courses concentrating on cannabis cultivation and regulatory compliance.  This fall she will also teach a new course, Medical Applications of Cannabis.  NCCC offers flexible learning options where students can take courses both online and in-person.

At Thursday’s panel, Moore will cover the topic of public health of cannabis and education.    The event runs from 9:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in room 147 of Diefendorf Hall on the South Campus of UB, and will feature more than a dozen experts in the community.  There is no fee to attend this event, and it is open to the public.  For more information and to register, visit https://rb.gy/tputbf

NCCC to Host Information Nights

Niagara County Community College (NCCC) will host a series of division specific informational nights this month to introduce prospective students to the programs and services available at the college.  The events will consist of program presentations, classroom visits, and a campus tour.  Students will be able to check the status of their application or apply if they have not yet done so.  The information nights will run from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on the following dates:

  • Monday, July 18 Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Tuesday, July 19 Business and STEM
  • Wednesday, July 20 Nursing, Physical and Allied Health
  • Thursday, July 21 Hospitality, Baking & Culinary Arts*
